The Acquisition and Discovery Engineering team at Walmart is dedicated to providing a seamless and delightful shopping experience to millions of shoppers worldwide. As a software engineer in this team, you will have the opportunity to work on top of the funnel shopping experience – Homepage, Content Pages for SEO and SEM, Search & Browse experiences, Deals and Item pages across mobile and web platforms.  

This collaborative team made up of Engineering, UX, Product Management, Business and Analytics is rapidly iterating on new products and site features at scale. We deliver high performing solutions on our next generation front-end platform. Virtual Try-On, Gen AI integration, personalized complete-the-look, Video shopping, etc. are just a few examples of the features developed by this team in collaboration with many other teams. Continuous experimentation, innovation and feedback by millions of customers makes this work even more exciting! 

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join Acquisition and Discovery Engineering team. This hands-on role requires exceptional coding skills, a passion for technology and engineering excellence, and the ability to guide and mentor a large team of engineers. You will play a pivotal role in defining and maintaining our technical architecture, ensuring alignment with business goals and scalability requirements. 

What You’ll Do:

As a Principal Software Engineer for Item Read and Rollups team at Walmart, you’ll have the opportunity to

Guide and mentor, a team of engineers, conducting code reviews and leading design discussions to ensure engineering best practices.  

Act as a technical authority, providing direction and expertise to the team.  

Drive the adoption of coding standards, design patterns, and development best practices.  

Architectural Leadership:  

Lead the creation and maintenance of our technical architecture, aligning it with business goals and scalability requirements.  

Architect complex software systems, ensuring performance, security, and scalability needs are met.  

Software Craftsmanship:  

Consistently produce high-quality software with a focus on unit testing, regular code reviews, and continuous integration.  

Uphold high standards in quality and operational excellence. 

Technical Documentation:  

Develop comprehensive technical documentation and presentations to clearly communicate architectural decisions and design options.  

Ensure documentation aligns with project scopes, milestones, and deliverables.  

Engineering Advocacy:  

Promote and enforce technical standards across the organization to achieve concrete outcomes and drive engineering excellence.  

Foster a culture of learning and innovation through hands-on technical guidance and mentorship. 

 

Project Leadership:  

Lead the discovery phase of major projects, ensuring the design aligns with business goals and technical requirements. 

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scopes and milestones.  

Cross-functional Collaboration:  

Collaborate closely with Architects, Product Management, UX/UI, Quality Assurance, and DevOps teams.  

Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  

Innovation and Research:  

Stay at the forefront of technological advancements, conducting research to identify emerging tools and methodologies.  

What you’ll Bring:

Ideally 8+ experience in software development, focusing on building large scale distributed systems.  

Experience with Java, JavaRx, Kafka, Spring framework, Cassandra, Cache.

Proven ability in building large scale backend applications.

Advanced knowledge of complex software design, distributed system design, design patterns, data structures, and algorithms.  

Excellent technical debugging and production support skills.  

Familiarity with public cloud technologies such as Azure or Google Cloud Platform.  

Experience operating software running on a containerized platform (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)

Experience in continuous integration and delivery.

Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to balance conflicting interests in a complex and fast-paced environment.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00-$286,000.00
