Department Summary:

The Hazard Identification Department is seeking an Aviation Systems Engineer to join our leadership team located at MITRE in McLean, VA. The Hazard Identification Department, a member of the Transportation Safety Division, is seeking to advance the United States and the world to the next level of transportation safety, focusing on developing and applying analytic capabilities and techniques, including artificial intelligence and modeling and simulation, to generate in-time safety intelligence and actionable mitigations.

Roles & Responsibilities:

As an Aviation Systems Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in managing and executing an aviation analysis and studies project. Your primary responsibility will be to identify and address safety issues through the analysis of large data sets, ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency in aviation operations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver insights and solutions that drive improvements in aviation systems.

Responsibilities:

Lead and manage aviation analysis and studies projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.Analyze large and complex data sets to identify safety issues, trends, and opportunities for improvement in safety systems.Develop and implement methodologies for analysis and identification of hazards to support safety and efficiency initiatives.Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, safety experts, and project managers, and lead efforts to adaptively work with external stakeholders in developing and implementing innovative solutions which rapidly generate and share safety intelligence with decision makers.Prepare and present detailed reports and presentations to stakeholders, highlighting findings, recommendations, and project progress.Utilize project management tools and techniques to plan, execute, and monitor project activities, ensuring timely delivery and resource allocation.Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in aviation systems engineering and safety analysis.

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience..Proven experience in aviation systems engineering, with a focus on safety analysis and data-driven decision-making.Strong proficiency in data analysis tools and software, such as MATLAB, Python, R, or similar.Demonstrated experience in managing projects, with a strong understanding of project management methodologies and tools.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field and 10 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, System Engineering, or a related field and 8 years of related experience; or a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experienceExtensive experience working within the aviation industry, particularly in safety departments or roles focused on safety management.Familiarity with Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA), Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), Safety Management Systems (SMS), or other voluntary safety programs.Proven track record of implementing or enhancing safety programs and initiatives within an aviation context.Pilot qualifications such as Commercial Pilot License, Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFI-I), or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification are highly desirable.Knowledge of aviation safety regulations and standards, such as ICAO, FAA, or EASA, is highly desirable.Experience collaborating with regulatory bodies and industry groups to advance safety standards and practices.Strong understanding of aviation operations and the ability to apply pilot experience to safety analysis and systems engineering.Demonstrated ability to lead safety studies, risk assessments, and incident investigations.Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs or workshops for aviation professionals.Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.These preferred qualifications will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to our aviation analysis and studies project, ensuring a comprehensive approach to safety and operational excellence.
