Pratt & Whitney is seeking a Principal Design Engineer to join the Externals Design team which is within the Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering organization who has design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low-cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements to support our Advanced Military Program.

What You Will Do:

Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals; process technical and design requirements of gas turbine Externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets, and electrical harnesses; Perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, air management plumbing, and electrical and harness systems hardware; Utilize standard work and CORE/ACE tools to improve the externals design process.

Work with experienced design engineers on conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design activities related to engine architectures.  External hardware includes a vast and challenging array of parts including tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, and component mounts. All design work will utilize UG-NX solid modeling and other modeling and analysis tools.

Collaborate with virtually every module on a Pratt & Whitney gas turbine engine as well as integration of different systems on the engine including lubrication, electrical, fuel, and air systems' Routinely interface with other disciplines including structures, project, and product definition.

Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc.); interface with internal and external customers.

Negotiate design criteria/space with other groups including internal and external customers.

Complete complex tolerance stacks for fit/function.

Travel up to 10%.

What You Will Learn:

Apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools.Overall design process of parts for engines including new and existing designs.

Qualifications You Must Have:

Bachelor’s degree in STEM and 8 years of engineering experience; OR an Advanced degree with 5 years of engineering experience.

U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree.

Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance.

Mechanical design experience within the aerospace or turbofan engine industry.

Experience with CAD (UG NX, Solidworks, or similar) solid modeling and finite element analysis tools (i.e., ANSYS or similar); program/project management tools (i.e., SAP, EVMS, Teamcenter); and understanding of hardware, blueprints, dimensions & tolerances (GD&T), and manufacturing methods.

Programs or project management experience (PMP certification); Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and tools (i.e., LEAN, CORE, ACE, or Six Sigma).

Department Overview: Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering is responsible for the design, development, and in-service support of power transmission systems, bearing compartment and rotor support design and analysis, oil and thermal management systems, engine externals packaging, and architecture, as well as nacelles for commercial and military engine models.

Technical disciplines include Project Engineering, Mechanical Design, Structural Analysis, Product Definition, System Modeling, Mechanical Design analysis for bearings gears, and seals, and fluid-thermal modeling of associated components and systems.

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite.  This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
