We are seeking an experienced and driven Principal Energy Engineer with a strong background in HVAC systems to lead and support energy management initiatives across our organization. The successful candidate will spearhead projects focused on energy efficiency, retro-commissioning, heat pump design and implementation, and sustainability strategies for new building projects. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for updating the Energy Roadmap and driving our energy management programs toward operational excellence. The Principal Energy Engineer will support Roche Sites Network and Genentech site. Travel time is expected to be less than 10%.
Key Responsibilities:Project Management: Lead the initiation of energy-focused projects including retro-commissioning, low-temperature hot water (LTHW) conversion, and HVAC system upgrades. The Principal Energy Engineer will be assigned a portfolio of approximately 6 projects at a time (ranging from $0.3M to $20M) for which they will attend key meetings and provide energy management input, technical options analysis, and provide project management support.
Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Identify and implement measures to enhance energy efficiency, including designing and overseeing heat pump installations and retrofits. Develop and implement energy efficiency initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption and lowering operational costs for key customers. Key responsibilities include analyzing large sets of data, recommending sustainable solutions to enhance overall energy performance and support ongoing energy management programs.
Energy Roadmap Update: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to update and maintain the company’s Energy Roadmap, ensuring alignment with long-term sustainability goals to achieve real zero scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050.
Sustainability Support for New Buildings: Provide expert guidance on energy-efficient design and sustainability principles for new construction projects, ensuring state-of-the-art energy solutions. Assist with developing and updating site specific mechanical design standards based on Roche and Genentech corporate standards (including corporate “K” directives), but customized for the SSF site.
Demand Response Initiatives: Develop and manage demand response programs to reduce peak demand charges, optimizing energy usage during high-cost periods and contributing to overall operational cost savings.
Technical Expertise: Serve as the Sustainable Operations’ subject matter expert (SME) in HVAC systems, particularly for research and development laboratories, and ensure optimal system performance. Utilize cutting-edge technologies, including AI and machine learning, to optimize energy performance in central utility plants and other critical infrastructure, ensuring continuous improvement in efficiency and sustainability outcomes.
Collaboration: Work closely with sustainability teams, Facilities & Engineering, Site Automation, Design & Construction, and external vendors to ensure project success and compliance with energy standards and regulations. Must have excellent communication, presentation, leadership, collaborative, conflict negotiation, and interpersonal skills in order to influence key stakeholders and manage complex, high-impact projects.
Network Community of Practice Sharing: The Principal Energy Engineer will be an expert on industry HVAC system trends and new technologies. A portion of this role will be continuous learning , engaging with the broader Roche network such as Community of Practice (CoP Energy) and outside organizations such as I2SL, ASHRAE, and ISPE.
Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related field.
12+ years of experience in energy engineering, with a strong focus on HVAC systems, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Extensive knowledge of low-temperature hot water conversion and heat pump design and operation.
Hands-on experience with retro-commissioning and implementing energy management programs.
Familiarity with research and development lab systems.
Strong understanding of sustainability practices and how they can be integrated into building and system designs.
Preferred Skills:Professional Engineer (P.E.), Certified Energy Engineer (CEM), Project Management Professional (PMP) and Master’s degree in Engineering with a preference for Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
Experience working with utility companies and energy incentive programs.
Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience in energy modeling with strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Familiarity with cGMP regulations and clean utilities is a plus.
Track record of success in high performing organizations to deliver strong results with urgency and consistency.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $141,500.00 - $262,900.00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
