JOB SCOPE

The Principal Engineer II leads the planning, design, development, implementation, and execution of innovative application and platform solutions related to service delivery (Wi-Fi, 5G, and MVNO), security, and datacenter systems supporting Charter’s wireless network. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of wireless technology operations while driving innovation in automation, cloud-native solutions, advanced networking practices, and database management. The Principal Engineer II is responsible for driving the identification and adoption of best-in-class operational practices and procedures across a multidimensional landscape for business-as-usual tasks, deployments, capacity planning, forecasting, resiliency, hardening, and disaster recovery/high availability (DR/HA). They will design and establish standard operating procedures, develop and implement platform enhancements, and make recommendations for continuous improvement. Additionally, the role involves leading the implementation of approved application designs and security solutions while optimizing service delivery for Wi-Fi, 5G, and MVNO platforms. As a central figure in the organization, this role requires close collaboration with Product teams, Engineering and Development organizations, vendors, and MSO partners to align operational objectives with strategic priorities and ensure seamless delivery of high-performance wireless solutions.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement cloud-native solutions and best practices to support robust, maintainable, and secure wireless infrastructure.Lead and manage the operational aspects of wireless mobile networks, including 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, and 5G Core systems.Provide end-to-end support for BSS/OSS platforms, ensuring seamless API transactions and system integrations.Support database management activities, including writing and optimizing advanced SQL queries for BSS/OSS operations.Apply expertise in device and entitlement management for wireless device engineering to ensure proper configuration, authentication, and operational integrity.Design, write, and maintain scripts, code, and configurations to automate and optimize operations workflows.Drive infrastructure provisioning and management using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform and Ansible to enable version-controlled, reproducible, and scalable environments.Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support efficient deployments and updates for operational systems.Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical leadership to operations team members.Act as a central point of contact, working closely with Product teams, Engineering and Development organizations, vendors, and MSO partners to align operational objectives with strategic priorities.Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of new solutions and continuous improvement of existing systems.Represent the operations team in cross-functional meetings, communicating challenges, goals, and progress effectively.Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the operations team, staying updated on emerging technologies and trends.Drive innovation in wireless technology operations to support the organization’s strategic objectives.Expertise in wireless mobile networks (4G/5G), Wi-Fi systems, 5G Core, and BSS/OSS operations.Advanced knowledge of Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms, including AWS EKS and other Kubernetes distributions.Expertise in cloud platforms (AWS preferred), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), and automation frameworks. Deep understanding of advanced cloud networking, AWS Transit Gateway, and hybrid/on-premises network architectures.Strong knowledge of API transactions and advanced SQL query writing and optimization for database management in BSS/OSS systems.Expertise in device and entitlement management for wireless device engineering.Expert-level knowledge of network design, network architecture, protocols, TCP/IP, and the OSI Model.Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Go, or similar, to support automation and operational workflows.Proven ability to collaborate with stakeholders, manage vendor relationships, and lead cross-functional initiatives.Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring technical teams in operational environments.Passionate about driving operational excellence in wireless technology and cloud-native solutions.Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with the ability to manage complex challenges in a fast-paced environment.Adaptability to evolving technologies and business needs, with a focus on delivering impactful and future-proof solutions.

BASIC / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in engineering or related field or related work experienceEngineering work experience - 10+ yearsProject management work experience - 10+ yearsMust be able to work the following shift: Monday - Friday (8:00 am to 5:00 pm)

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Systems knowledge (Linux, Unix, StarOS, etc)Infrastructure knowledge (Raw Iron, Steel Cloud, ElasticCloud, OpenStack, AWS, RedHat Openshift)Knowledge and experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM, Hyper-V).Proficiency in containerization and orchestration tools, including Kubernetes and Docker.Proficiency in networking technologies (e.g., routing, switching, firewalls, VLANs, VPNs).Ability to work in a team environmentIn-depth knowledge in areas of specialty for specific applications, and general knowledge of supporting or integrating applications creating platform ecosystems.Expertise Knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI ModelExpert knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations.Expert knowledge of software designing software, such as Visio.Ability to perform duties in a very fast-paced environment and ability to learn new technology quickly.General knowledge of OSI stack and application architectures.

The base pay for this position generally is between $124,000.00 and $220,000.00. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums and also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
