Job Summary
This position is responsible for technical expertise relating to the development, expansion, planning design, maintenance and operation of the High Reliability and Network electric distribution systems at APC and GPC. This position will coordinate the evaluation of High Reliability/Network system failures, system reliability data and resolutions. This position will support operations during unplanned maintenance, capacity and reliability upgrades and the assessment of emerging issues. This position will be responsible for coordinating the evaluation of High Reliability and Network electric distribution systems. In addition, this position will be responsible for material standards related to the underground network system including network transformers, vaults, protectors, limiters and specialized distribution cables used on the High Reliability and Network systems. The responsibilities will include construction standards for the installation of specialized distribution cable, splicing materials, underground switches and facilities. This position will be responsible for providing summaries and recommendations through root cause analysis of Network Underground distribution system failures including cable, splice failures and manhole events. This position will provide technical expertise in determining design policies and standards for an engineering staff responsible for designing network and high reliability distribution systems which serve large demand, high profile, and high revenue customers systemwide. The principal engineer will also provide technical support and expertise to the Operations and Reliability department of Network Underground. This individual must be a recognized expert and leader in his field. The position could represent Alabama Power, Georgia Power and Southern Company on various industry committees.
Job Responsibilities
+ Responsible for material and construction standards
+ Provide failure analysis of all equipment and materials including summaries and recommendations.
+ Responsible for Splice and Pothead design on the Network System.
+ Responsible for the development and updates of the Network Engineering Handbook.
+ Provide technical assistance in the development and compliance of department policies, standards, and safe work procedures pertaining to all applicable codes
+ Responsible for the development and updates of all Network Specifications
+ Provide formal and informal training throughout the organization on various technical practices and standards
+ Assist in department efforts on special projects.
+ Evaluate new products.
+ Develop new design techniques and provide training.
+ Review and approve updates to network feeder one-line operating maps
+ Assist Operations & Reliability section as required with technical expertise
+ Apply customer-related policies and practices uniformly and consistently
+ Provide Non-Owned Distribution System Evaluation
+ Provide Construction Methods and Practices
+ Provide input to the planning department on future Network needs
+ Assist other operating companies in the evaluation of Network and Hi-Reliability systems.
Job Experience and Education
+ Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent is required
+ Commitment to Safety Excellence
+ Professional Engineering certification is required
+ Five or more years of Transmission/Distribution engineering experience is required
+ Network experience is preferred
+ Previous experience in presenting large and complex projects before DPRT and T&D is highly desired
+ SERP/Outage restoration is preferred
+ Other valuable experience includes working with IBEW contract, knowledge of transmission and substation operations, knowledge of Section “O”, system design experience, serving on statewide committees, knowledge of sales and economic development, experience with design standards and experience resolving customer issue with partner organizations.

+ Knowledge of Distribution operations practices and procedures preferred

+ The position requires an in-depth knowledge of electrical distribution network systems.
+ Knowledge of NESC requirements is highly desired
+ Working knowledge of ARMS, ADMS/TCMS, JETS, CYME, DistView, SCADA and strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office products is highly desired.
+ Broad understanding of the company’s operations, policies and procedures

Other Requirements
+ Valid Driver's License.
+ Successful candidate must be available to support outages or other abnormal conditions outside of their normal work schedule.
+ Overnight travel is sometimes required.
+ Be in the field at least 25% of the time with employees
+ Use email, mobile device, company radios, etc. to maintain good communication with supervision. Ensure compliance with Southern Company Electronic Communication Policy.
+ Must live in/near or be willing to relocate within reasonable distance to Atlanta or Birmingham.
