Job Overview – As an Amazon Robotics mechanical engineer, you will develop innovative hardware designs for our emerging robotic systems and improve existing hardware to optimize performance and enhance customer experience.
The ideal candidate has experience designing and analyzing mechanical systems, enjoys analytical problem solving, possesses practical knowledge of high volume manufacturing methods and is a role model for engineering best practices. This position reports directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager.
Key job responsibilities
The Principal Engineer will be responsible for:
-Technically leading an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including requirements, specification, design, prototyping, validation and testing
-Developing the architecture and path to implementation for complex camera, compute or machine vision modules
-Collaborating with other cross-functional teams and customers on new product introduction or technology development.
-Working with the Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Quality organizations as well as vendors to ensure a smooth product launch and sustaining
-Writing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures
-Exhibit role model behaviors of thorough engineering analysis and cradle to grave ownership
-Design and adaptation of holistic hardware solutions for ambiguous problems with fluid requirements
-Developing engineering artifacts that set the standard for hardware development
-Provides expertise to crossfunctional team members and across the business in the area of sensing technologies
-Leading innovation, contributing to intellectual property
-Act as a trusted technical leader able to provide advisement to director and above
-Leader and developer of sensor strategy and technology roadmap
-Technical mentorship

Basic Qualifications
- BS / MS Electrical, Mechanical or Optical Engineering (or similar field).
-10 + years of experience in mechanical, electrical and system level design.
-Thorough understanding of technical principles and concepts in hardware development.
-Ability to lead the design, implementation, and delivery of hardware in highly ambiguous problem spaces, that have long-term impact on a major product or system architecture.
-Ability to actively recruit for Amazon as well as participate in the hiring/interview process.
-Experience mentoring and developing younger engineers.
-Ability to “Think Big” and help set direction and guidance for technology development.
-Ability to lead a multidisciplinary technical team.
-Experience working with 3rd party engineering service providers.
-Ability to tackle intrinsically hard problems.
-Able to apply judgment and experience to balance trade-offs between competing interests.
-Provide flexible approaches to meet the needs of the team, project, and product.
-Expert in sensing and compute technologies.
-Expert in engineering tools such as CAD and Analytical tools
-Expertise in engineering best practices
-Experience designing complex hardware products to include machine vision and compute products. etc.).
-Expertise in DFX design best practices.
-Extensive system design interfacing to a wide array of electro-mechanical subsystems and debugging experience.
-Expertise in testing practices and design process flows.
-Problem solver, “can do”, ”get any task done” attitude. Strong organizational and planning skills.
-Desire to work in a fast-paced environment & customer focused.
-Demonstrated ability to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs quickly, and can proficiently translate those needs into the right technology solution.

-Able to provide the customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions.
-Excellent written (white papers) and oral communication skills.
-Ability to support domestic and international travel as required by the program.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Optical Engineering (or similar field)
-Experience with sensor modalities (time-of-flight, stereo, RGB, mmWave radar, LiDAR) is highly desirable.
-Experience designing for IEC 60204 and/or IEC 61508 machinery safety standards preferred.
-Experience designing, developing and certifying safety rated systems is desirable.
-Experience with the project management of technical projects a plus.
-Experience troubleshooting and resolving EMI/EMC issues.
-Proficient with Matlab and PSPICE
-Experience with Zemax or similar analytical tools
