Principal Mechanical Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Uses extensive level knowledge to plan major programs and lead teams.  Coordinates design engineering activities on assigned projects.  Works independently to achieve goals and objectives.   Responsible for product design and process development activities on assigned projects; ensures product designs and processes meet customer specifications and technical requirements. Supports program management with technical advice and direction on assigned programs.  Adheres to program financial goals and provides financial estimates and status updates to program management. Resolves technical issues as they arise during fabrication with assistance from pertinent Operations personnel and Process Owner Engineers; identifies root causes of problems using analytical techniques; identifies the appropriate resources to resolve the issue; provides clear, complete, and concise reports regarding technical issues. Supports advanced technology development by offering insights and informed suggestions for new concepts and research and development activities. Supports Business Development activities through participation in customer presentations and proposal preparation. Provides reference materials, guidance, and training to design engineers and others where appropriate via mentoring, informal training, and formal training (i.e. setting up instructor led training sessions on relevant topics).

Education & Experience

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.  An understanding of optical and mechanical design processes and the ability to apply engineering theories and concepts are essential.

Minimum 9 years of related experience in a professional role with Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent experience. Minimum 7 years with Master’s degree or 4 years with Ph.D.

Skills

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently or working with others.  Strong organizational skills and attention to details required. Strong mechanical design skills with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and familiarity with FEA (Simcenter or FEMAP preferred). Experience in preparing and maintaining drawings, procedures, work instructions, and Bill of Materials in an environment of complete document and configuration control is desired. Experience with the design of optical systems for advance light sources from concept to production. Perform analysis of optics, mounting strategies, detailed geometric tolerances, manufacturability, and cost.  Experience with detail design, development, and validation of mechanical assemblies. Solid understanding of design for assembly and integration in complex opto-mechanical devices including tolerance stack analysis. Experience in metal machining and conventional optical fabrication technologies (grinding, polishing, coating, testing, etc.).  Experience in design for manufacturing across the entire product cycle. Good analytical and problem-solving skills.  Familiarity with analytical tools used for problem solving and process development, including DOE. Experience with networked PC based computer system (MS Office, spreadsheets, graphics, Email, ERP systems, and accounting software).

Opto-mechanical assembly techniques  Optical alignment and optical alignment tools and methods Crystalline, glass, and polymer materials for refractive systems in the IR, SWIR, NIR, Visible, and UV portions of the spectrum Anti-Reflective (AR), High-Reflective (HR), and filter optical coatings Metals, plating, conversion film, and coating materials for mechanical structures or reflective optical system substrates Materials and mounting methods for opto-mechanical systems; preparation and use of primers, one and two part adhesives, and elastomers Optical element cleaning, handling, and packaging Composite material design and assembly Assisting other engineers and technicians in alignment methods, error budgets, error analysis, and tools Optical metrology and/or alignment instruments and techniques (interferometers, spectrophotometers, autocollimators, theodolites, measuring/toolmaker microscope, lasers, etc.) Mechanical metrology instruments and techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T Y14.5) Knowledge of optical and mechanical materials and fabrication processes Experience using CAD software; SOLIDWORKS experience preferred Vendor/supplier sub-contract management including optics, mechanics, tooling fabrication, and optical coatings Knowledge of thermal, mechanical, vibration, and shock effects on optical systems

Use hands/fingers to type/handle.  Operating a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Sedentary Work. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
