Principal Network Engineer

The Principal Network Engineer is a senior leader responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the organization’s network infrastructure. This role combines strategic planning, technical expertise, and hands-on support to ensure high network performance, security, and alignment with business goals. The Principal Network Engineer provides expert guidance, mentors junior staff, and leverages advanced networking technologies and emerging trends to support the company’s IT strategy.

Summary:

Founded by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan, Scaled Composites is a 41-year-old aerospace company continually working to push boundaries, prove out ideas, and influence the future. We are a rapid prototyping and manufacturing facility, designing, building, and testing proof-of-concept and prototype vehicles. We have flown an average of one new aircraft type per year over our 41-year history such as Proteus, GlobalFlyer, SpaceShipOne, Model 401, and Stratolaunch.

 

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Document network problems and resolutions for future reference.Design, deploy, and optimize enterprise-wide networks, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, and cloud-based infrastructure.Act as a technical authority on network projects, including upgrades, migrations, and new implementations.Oversee network monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning to meet current and future business needs.Ensure licensing compliance in accordance with local, state, federal, and international law.Execute the installation and termination of CAT6 cable and fiber optic connections.Oversee the configuration, operation, and maintenance of the Cisco Unified Communications Platform, ensuring seamless connectivity and reliability.Provide user interface and support for facility Network and/or Telecommunications systems as needed.Collaborate with IT leadership to define network strategies and align them with organizational objectives.Mentor and train network engineering staff, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing.Provide off-hours coverage when required and other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Expert knowledge of networking protocols (e.g. OSPF, STP, LACP, DNS, DHCP) and network security concepts (e.g., firewalls, VPNs, ZTNA, NAC).Ability to analyze complex network traffic using packet analyzer software such as Wireshark. Hands-on experience with Aruba, Fortinet, and Cisco enterprise networking equipment.Experience with Aruba ClearPass.Experience with Cisco Unified Communications Manager and connected infrastructure. Experience managing a centralized wireless LAN infrastructure. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under frequently changing priorities. Good organizational skills and attention to detail.Good time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to perform effectively in a high-paced and dynamic environment.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with 5 years’ experience; or 9 years of experience in lieu of a degree.DoD 8570 IAT level II (or higher) security certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) is required (example: Security+). CCNP certification (or CCNA with the ability to obtain CCNP within 6 months of hire) is required. Additional certifications such as CCIE, Fortinet FCP/FCX, and/or Aruba ACP are highly desired.

Essential Functions:

Requires mobility and the ability to bend and reach.May infrequently require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required; repetitive hand motion (e.g., to operate computer keyboard).Vision at close distances and the ability to adjust focus for prolonged periods (i.e., computer screen).Ability to remain sedentary or stationary for prolonged periods of time. Ability to write for extended periods of time. Ability to work in an office setting for prolonged periods of time.May be asked to carry up to 20 lbs. up and down a flight of stairs on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc. Occasional reaching overhead and lifting up to 15 pounds.Ability to converse and communicate information with others.Occasional exposure to chemical vapors and/or fumes in low non-hazardous concentration.Potential to climb up and down steps on a daily basis.Must be able to read and understand SDS.
