Principal R&D Grinding Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Drive development of high speed grinding process with a strong focus on improving quality, throughput and manufacturing costs Initiate technical ideas to improve high speed grinding process Serve as a subject matter expert for the grinding process Collaborate with the other team members to understand  the influence of upstream and downstream process on the substrate quality.  Develop technical approaches, schedules, and deliverables with detailed project plan  Implement innovative solutions to high speed grinding process Develop next-generation grinding process with higher throughput, improved quality and reduced manufacturing costs  Deliver results with an expedited timeline  Establish, review, and update both short-term and long term experimental plans  Utilize statistical tools to characterize technological processes and determine process reliability and “bottlenecks”.  Analyze process/product failure modes. Provide rapid feedback to the SiC production team Readily communicate the ideas, experimental and analytical results to the team in an open and timely manner to accelerate the technology progress Perform fundamental research related to SiC grinding process Be an expert in analytics tools and data analysis Actively participate in exploring  next generation grinding technologies Generates scientific and technical ideas and contributes to the Intellectual Property of II-VI by writing IP disclosures and patent applications. 

Education & Experience

Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering,, Physics or Materials science with minimum 5 yr.  high speed rigid grinding experience MS in Mechanical Engineering with 10yr. high speed grinding experience Solid experience in high speed grinding of semiconductor or hard materials such as GaAS, Si, InP, SiC and Sapphire Extensive knowledge of principles of surface grinding and associated grinders Extensive hands on experience with high speed surface grinders Experience in high volume manufacturing of semiconductor products Extensive hands-on experience with statistical tools and their use for process characterization, including failure and error analysis. Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE). Ability to handle multiple priorities and work with employees and customers in a multi-cultural, global team environment Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Design of experiments methodology for process development, statistical software tools for data analysis Ability to manage projects involving procurement, installation and prove-in of grinders and associated equipment Ability to handle multiple priorities involving external and internal priorities Ability to work with cross-functional teams and excel in a growing cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment Ability to work with vendors and evaluate technology Handle special assignments promptly and professionally Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism, leadership, and competency

Working Conditions

Normally 9-5 May require longer working hours in order to complete mission critical tasks On site in Pine Brook NJ and Easton, PA

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 10 lb. parts
