Principal Scientist, R&D – Analytical Science
Job Description

This Principal Scientist position in the Manufacturing Analytical team within Analytical Sciences is located at our Glenview, IL Kraft Heinz Innovation Center. This is an ideal opportunity for a scientist who enjoys identifying and implementing rapid and novel testing solutions for factory process control monitoring of food products. The position emphasizes cross-functional problem solving with Research and Development (R&D), Quality, Operations and Factory personnel to identify needs and develop fit-for-purpose analytical testing solutions for a wide range of leading food products.

The successful candidate will direct technical professionals in assigned areas, while maintaining responsibility for own projects. The candidate will have significant impact on direction and quality of work done by other senior technical people. The candidate should have aptitudes for application and maintenance of complex analytical instrumentation. The candidate will be evaluated on communication skills and potential for demonstrating technical leadership within a scientifically and culturally diverse organization.

RELATIONSHIPS (EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL):

· Will collaborate with internal clients including R&D, Quality, Operations and Factory personnel.

· Will interact with instrument vendors, ingredient suppliers, external lab partners, consortiums and academics.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

· Established history of Process Analytical Technology (PAT) involving near-line and in-line testing of raw materials, in-process and finished goods.

· Wide-ranging experience with a variety of analytical instrumentation including sensors, Near Infrared (NIR), Infrared (IR), Raman, NMR and classical food chemistry testing is required.

· Extensive experience working autonomously to design the best method development approach, using appropriate sampling theory, applying preprocessing to build robust calibrations models with real-time analyzers, implementing & validating at factories.

· Deep knowledge of applied chemometrics, statistical analysis and data interpretation skills to calibrate, classify and analyze mixtures to improve the understanding of chemical information, correlate parameters and troubleshoot.

· Agile at influencing & inspiring R&D, Quality, Operations & Factory cross-functional teams to deliver improved quality and value for in-factory chemical and physical tests.

· Proven history to activate external networks to address all project dimensions & ensure success with examples of career-long learning & implementing novel & emerging technologies.

· Advanced chemistry and physics background behind classical analytical methods to evaluate and improve methods and to choose best primary methods for calibration.

· Working knowledge of ISO17025 and LABLynx.

· BS, MS or PhD degree in chemistry, chemometrics, food science, biochemistry or related field with substantial years of applied industrial experience.

· Excellent organizational, interpersonal & project management skills.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· TRAVEL: 0-20%
