Security Copilot empowers defenders to detect hidden patterns, harden defenses, and respond to incidents faster with generative AI.  While Generative AI has created a new set of possibilities, it’s also created a new set of challenges: hallucination, prompt injection, industry trends change weekly.  Our team is at the forefront of both the opportunities and the challenges for Microsoft Security.  We are looking for a **Principal Software Engineer** for Security Copilot to execute strategic AI platform priorities, drive alignment across internal and external stakeholders. We are seeking an experienced **Principal Software Engineer** to join the **Security Copilot AI Platform Team** . In this role, you will be define architectural direction for Orchestrator, Agents Engine, Agents Primitivies, NL* strategy and AI services to support ever growing needs to interact with base and custom LLMs. You will work closely with AI researchers, security engineers, and product teams to ensure responsible AI compliance and enhance retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond. **Responsibilities** + Lead the design and development of our enterprise-based platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance. + Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and drive the implementation of innovative solutions that are required for Microsoft Security services to deliver copilot experiences. + Implement best practices for model evaluation, and deployment in production environments. + Mentor and guide Senior and junior engineers, influence Engineering Managers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence. + Collaborate with product management to prioritize features and roadmap initiatives based on customer needs and market trends. + Ensure adherence to coding standards, software quality, and best practices for software development lifecycle management. + Empower thousands of engineers to leverage the extensibility framework through the creation of framework learning and maintenance processes.  + Develop the material needed to empower others to build on top of Copilot for Security Platform. **Qualifications** **Required Qualifications** : + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. + 6+ years of industry experience in Software/AI/ML Engineering, NLP (Natural Language Processing), or Security AI applications. + Proficient understanding of LLMs (Large Language Models), transformers, agents, learning and fine-tuning techniques. + Experience in ML model selection, inference optimization, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). + Knowledge of AI safety, bias mitigation, and compliance frameworks + Hands-on experience with orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, Semantic Kernel, OpenAI Function Calling). + Proficiency in vector databases and LLM (Large Language Models) caching mechanism **Other Requirements:** Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  + Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. **Additional or Preferred Qualifications:** + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
