Principal Software Engineering Manager
The **Edge Distribution Services (EDS)** team at Microsoft works on innovative digital distribution technology. EDS’ Windows Update service reaches over a billion devices, keeping them secure and up to date. The team is hiring for a **Principal Software Engineering Manager**  to lead the Platform and Infrastructure team which is responsible for building a modern compliant microservice cloud platform for the distribution system that serves Microsoft customers across the world.  As **Principal Software Engineering Manager** , you will be responsible for leading a team of highly motivated engineers in solving complex problems, driving the adoption of good engineering practices and collaborating across groups to deliver successful outcomes.  Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond. **Responsibilities** + Drive and support partnership with appropriate stakeholders to determine platform and infrastructure requirements within and across teams. + Develop strategies to improve release processes, incorporate automated testing, and optimize developer workflows. + Promote the adoption of edge technologies to empower developers and advance organizational goals. + Seek new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of the infrastructure and services. + Guide teams and leads identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform. + Lead and mentor a high performing, talented group of engineers and foster a diverse, inclusive, and result driven team culture.   + Model, coach, and care for employees and peers, helping everyone to bring their best self to work and enable their career growth. **Qualifications** **Required Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. + 3+ years people management experience. + Experience in large-scale distributed systems infrastructure. + Direct experience with Software Development Lifecycle including release and automated testing. **Other Requirements** Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: + Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. **Additional or Preferred Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python + OR equivalent experience. + 4+ years people management experience + Experience with cloud services including Azure or similar technologies. Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
