Principal Telematics Engineer
Principal Telematics Engineer 119117 The Data & Analytics department is looking for an expert to drive technical capability development and execution in our engineering team. The Principal Telematics Engineer will be the key contributor to the execution of motor portfolio strategy for the Technical Underwriting, Data Science and Technology teams and will build the architecture, systems, data pipelines, and technologies required to have a best-in-class telematics data ecosystem. This role will be based in our Schaumburg, IL North America Headquarters in a hybrid schedule. Responsibilities: + Design and build scalable data pipelines to ingest, store and process very large amounts of telematics data including streaming and real-time into the cloud-based Data Lake + Design and implement strategy to leverage telematics data in combination with other internal and external data to enable key business decisions. + Work closely with Business Unit analysts to build self-service experiences in our data democratization platform. + Work closely with the Technical Underwriting, Actuarial Science, BU leads, Portfolio Insights, Claims, and Data Science teams to deliver motor portfolio data analytics technical solutions. This includes end to end data orchestration, data layering, data governance, metadata management, deep rooted data analysis including propensity scores, catastrophic modeling, time-series analysis, and forecasting. + Analyze high volume telematics datasets to derive key insights on driver and fleet behavior. + Work with Telematics data aggregators to analyze and troubleshoot potential data quality issues and impact analysis on downstream modeling consumption. + Monitors and evaluates business initiatives against key performance indicators and communicates results and recommendations to management. + Innovate different ways of combining data sets, including automation, from various sources to augment our analytical literacy. + Design meaningful KPIs and effective visualizations that help with business decision making. + Develop new ways of acquiring external data to augment our existing analytics data repositories and predictive models. + Ensures senior leadership on critically important projects through clear & consistent communication. Basic Qualifications: + Bachelors Degree in Mathematics/Statistics and 7 or more years of experience OR + Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 7 or more years of experience OR + High School Diploma or Equivalent and 9 or more years of experience Preferred Qualifications: + Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Statistics, Master’s Degree preferred + 7+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, Business Intelligence or other quantitative disciplines, especially during company growth stages, in a cross-functional role. + 3+ years of management experience growing and leading data teams; proven record of building and motivating successful teams. + Expert level knowledge in both theory and implementation of **4+** Azure analytics, compute and data bases (SQL DB, Databricks, ADF, DBT, Delta Lake, Synapse, AKS, Azure Devops, Azure SQL, SnowFlake etc.) + Proficiency in programing languages such as Python, Scala, PySpark etc. + Hands on experience in working on an automated CI/CD environment following software engineering best practices. + Hands on experience developing in an agile software engineering environment in collaboration with other developers. + Hands on experience with Infrastructure as a code-implementations on cloud platform, preferably Azure. + Ability to develop architecture solution diagrams to explain design and implementation to various stakeholder. + Prior hands-on experience working with telematics data structures, formats, attributes, standards, and protocols. + Experience with integrating sensor driven data, driver behavioral data along with traditional insurance data (policy/exposure, claim etc.) to enable data analytics for improved risk management, enhanced safety, cost savings etc. + Prior hands-on experience delivering self-service big data and data visualization platforms + Strong Understanding of telematics systems, IoT devices, and data collection methodologies + Hands on experience consuming data from any IOT platform like AWS IOT, Azure IOT hub etc. + Strong Understanding of Pub Sub and Streaming Architecture with hands-on knowledge in an enterprise setup on one of Kafka, Spark Streaming, MQTT etc. + Hands on knowledge in an enterprise scale implementation with any GIS tools or Geo Coding libraries. + Strong Understanding of API technology including REST, SOAP etc. + Proven track record of handling large-scale data projects and delivering results. + Familiarity with the commercial insurance industry, including underwriting, claims, and risk assessment processes. + Understanding of regulatory requirements and standards in the insurance sector. + Strong knowledge of software development standards and engineering practices working within a shared codebase in a fast-paced environment + Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. + Excellent communication and collaboration abilities to work effectively with cross-functional teams. + Ability to translate complex data insights into actionable business strategies. + Relevant certifications in data engineering, cloud platforms, or insurance-related courses. + Proficiency in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning techniques. + Experience with data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, BOE or similar. + Hands on experience in processing raw IOT data from mobile and other telematics devices in near real time. + Familiarity with Geo-Spatial Libraries and implementation of Geo Fencing logic. + Hands on experience with implementing scoring models based on vehicle telematics data. The salary indicated represents a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for geographic differentials pertaining to the location where the position may be filled.
