Job Description
The Principal Engineer ("Principal") is a key technical leader within the Research, Active Measures & Emerging Technologies (RAM-ET) team, a strategic unit driving AbbVie’s Information Security mission across multiple domains.
This position can be located anywhere in the U.S.
The RAM-ET team operates at the intersection of threat intelligence, adversary engagement, and emerging technology innovation. This role requires an exceptional individual who can drive innovation while maintaining deep expertise in traditional security domains and emerging technologies, particularly AI/ML applications in cybersecurity.
The Principal serves three core functions:
1. Advanced R&D in emerging technologies with a focus on AI/ML for cybersecurity and risk management.
2. Threat intelligence operations, including privileged information sharing and counter-threat intelligence.
3. Cross-functional collaboration to enhance security automation, orchestration, and visualization frameworks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Emerging Technologies Leadership
- Participate in development (collect, contextualize, report) of executive-level strategic guidance on AI/ML advancements.
- Author position papers on emerging technologies to drive policy, architecture, and governance decisions, focused on controlling the risks the matter, and enabling quick and safe adoption of emerging tech
- Participate in design and delivery of executive training sessions on emerging technology impacts
- Participate in development and delivery of technical workshops driving understanding and adoption of emerging tech within ISRM
- Maintain and expand the emerging technologies cookbook and knowledge repository
- Independently develop on-demand strategic content packages for executive communications on emerging tech topics
- Lead experimentation and demonstration of emerging capabilities, particularly in AI/ML applications
Threat Intelligence & Active Measures
- Design and implement counter-threat intelligence operations with appropriate oversight
- Spearhead counter-threat intelligence strategies, including dark web monitoring and threat actor infrastructure analysis, including development of custom tooling.
- Provide rapid response and support during critical world events
Industry Leadership
- Represent AbbVie in leading security organizations such as OWASP, OASIS, Health-ISAC, ND-ISAC and similar industry and vertical organizations
- Contribute to industry-standard frameworks and best practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience OR Masters Degree and 7 years of Experience OR PhD and 3 years of experience
- Several years of experience with demonstrable technical expertise across multiple domains, to include information security and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated expertise in leveraging large datasets for predictive analysis and modeling.
- Proven track record of driving innovation and research initiatives in enterprise security
- Expert-level programming abilities with demonstrated full-stack development experience with modern languages, frameworks, and other ecosystem components.
- Proficiency with cloud computing platforms and concepts across major providers
- Experience with development using frontier LLM models, including common design patterns (e.g., RAG, prompt engineering, agent/tool design etc.).
Technical Expertise
- AI/ML knowledge, including experience with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Keras
- Expertise in detection engineering
- Proficiency with threat intelligence platforms, processes, methods and outputs
- Experience with security automation and orchestration
Leadership & Communication
- Experience delivering executive-level training and briefings
- Strong technical writing abilities for position papers and strategic documentation
- Proven track record of mentoring technical teams
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts for various audiences
- Experience leading, or participating in cross-functional security initiatives
This role requires an individual who can balance deep technical expertise with strategic thinking, while maintaining strong relationships across the security community and driving innovation in emerging technologies.

Salary: $117,500 - $223,500
