Course / Program DescriptionThis course fulfills California requirements for (a) a subject-specific pedagogy course for teaching reading in a Multiple Subject Credential program (CA Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential Program Standards, 2017) and (b) a course in developing English language skills for beginning readers for credentialed Single Subject teachers who want to add a multiple subject credential—READ (CTC document CL-621A 4/2017). Topics include assessment and instruction of foundational reading skills across grade levels including phonics and phonemic awareness, strategies to develop reading and comprehension of narrative and informational text to build discipline-specific knowledge, methods of instruction that are sensitive and responsive to the individual needs of all students, and selection of appropriate instructional materials and assessments. In order to complete assignments, participants must have access to at least 2-3 learners in the same grade level (in a classroom, after-school program or other setting).
Job DescriptionThe UCLA Extension Teacher Education program is hiring an instructor to teach Principles and Methods of Teaching Elementary Reading. The course is offered as open enrollment for candidates seeking to clear the READ renewal requirement with the CTC or add a multiple subjects authorization to a valid CTC credential. The course is taught in an online asynchronous format on Canvas. Course syllabi will be provided, and the instructor will tailor the course to meet the needs of the students enrolled in the course.

Updating course syllabus, as needed Updating course materials in Canvas Balancing an appropriate workload for rich learning Providing timely feedback and grading Submitting grades at the end of the course according to deadlines.*New instructors are required to take Canvas training to set up their first course before they start and to take UC-required training modules every other year
