Printing Technician and Bindery Specialist
Bindery Specialists perform all finishing activities (cutting, folding, padding, perfect or saddle-binding, etc.) required for the departments' printing orders. They set up and operate equipment such as cutters, collators, folders, paper drills, saddle-stitchers, shrink-wrappers, and padding machines, and perform hand-bindery work. They prepare jobs for shipment/delivery.

The Department of Business Services at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Printing Technician and Bindery Specialist. Bindery Specialists perform all finishing activities (cutting, folding, padding, perfect or saddle-binding, etc.) required for the departments' printing orders. They set up and operate equipment such as cutters, collators, folders, paper drills, saddle-stitchers, shrink-wrappers, and padding machines, and perform hand-bindery work. They prepare jobs for shipment/delivery. This position monitors, requisitions and receives paper and envelopes for both digital and offset presses. Goals are achieved independently and are established in coordination with the Senior Director of Print Services.

Responsibilities:

Perform all assigned bindery and finishing operations (collating, cutting, folding, padding, saddle-stitch, etc.) as specified on job jackets to meet or exceed production standards and the stated goals and objectives of the department.Monitor bindery supplies and notify supervisor of supply needs.Prepare and ship materials, ensuring prompt, timely delivery of completed printed jobs via PCS delivery personnel, UPS and motor freight.Serve as a back-up to delivery personnel.Enter timely, accurate and complete data concerning work and production time and materials into data collection system and/or timesheets and onto job jackets to meet departmental requirements.Supply all necessary samples for job jackets and sample boxes. Perform routine maintenance, preventative maintenance and repairs on bindery equipment. Inform supervisor of needed repairs.Monitors, requisitions and receives paper and envelopes for both digital and offset presses.In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalentExperience: At least one year of experience in printing operations and processes.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience using networked computerized printing systems and computerized document-inserting technology.Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenanceAbility to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Physical Demands

Operation, monitoring, and maintenance of bindery equipment involve repetitive loading, and unloading materials of various weights from various heights.       

Anticipated Hiring Range: $21.00 - $27.00 hourly, commensurate with education and experience. This is a non-exempt level, benefited position.
