Privacy Attorney (Contracts & Compliance)

AARP’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a mid-level Privacy Attorney who will be be responsible for supporting projects and executing tasks that mature AARP’s privacy program. This attorney will join a small team of privacy-focused subject matter experts and will have primary responsibility for designing and delivering AARP’s enterprise-wide privacy education programs, drafting and negotiating privacy-related terms in contracts with third parties, and maintaining the privacy policies of AARP and its affiliates. The successful candidate commits to understanding AARP’s business priorities and has a passion for applying their legal skill and experience to solving problems collaboratively with stakeholders across the organization. This attorney puts the consumer at the center of every judgment call and recommendation. All members of AARP’s OGC advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on the organization’s mission. Responsibilities Identifies legal risk. Analyzes and researches legal issues. Reviews and negotiates contracts. Provides legal guidance on membership issues. Provides legal guidance on nonprofit tax law. Provides legal guidance on intellectual property matters. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) degree with 3+ years of experience in a privacy counsel role. Proven ability to draft and negotiate data privacy agreements (DPAs) and privacy policies. Experience in creating and delivering internal training sessions or engagement opportunities to enhance organizational understanding of essential privacy concepts. Must currently be, or have the capability to become, a member in good standing with the District of Columbia bar or an equivalent state bar. Exceptional oral and written communication abilities are a must. Integrity and Ethics: A commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethics; a strong passion for our nonprofit mission is highly valued. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively while ensuring clear communication and attention to detail. Preferred: A blend of in-house, law firm, and/or government experience is preferred. Experience in developing programs that ensure compliance with U.S. privacy laws in products and practices.
