JOB SUMMARY:The Private Sector Specialist reports to the Director of Organizing/Private Sector. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to union building, internal organizing, and campaign development in areas of privatization or other member interests. Under the direction of the Director of Organizing/Private Sector, the Private Sector Specialist shall work closely with the LRS and the Regions in negotiations or on any workplace issues that arise in any privatized unit or local in CSEA or as needed in any other private sector Local of CSEA.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:1. Lead negotiations for first contracts in the private sector as assigned by the Director. Depending on the situation and any existing relationships between the parties, may be directed to assist rather than lead negotiations.2. Where directed, during a privatization, new organizing campaign or contract negotiation campaign, establish union building that creates additional participation and member involvement.3. During privatization, after new organizing or when directed by the Director of Organizing/Private Sector, actively work with membership to identify and develop new leaders and activists for the Locals.4. Coordinate programs and actions that address issues confronting members with the goal of building support and solidarity among them.5. During privatization, or when directed by the Director of Organizing/Private Sector, support field staff and lead or assist with negotiations for a private sector contract.6. Work closely with the Regions and Labor Relations Specialist to set up and coordinate any ratification of contracts in the private sector.7. Remain active in the Local after new organizing or privatization and negotiations to continue union building efforts and assist in the effectiveness of the new Local.8. Support field staff in the administration of contracts.9. Work with the Chair of the Private Sector Division to coordinate or assist with meetings of the Regional Private Sector Advisory Committees and any Private Sector Division meeting as assigned by the Director.10. Will maintain records pertaining to Administratorships and will coordinate the Private Sector Local President Structure as assigned by the Director.11. Schedule and assist in conducting trainings for any new private sector Local.12. Develop and maintain relationships with our members in the private sector as well as developing solid working relationships with management such as nursing home buyers or private sector operators, which will benefit membership and CSEA in general.13. Support any internal organizing efforts that engage members through action.14. Perform all other related duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Candidates must have a high school diploma.ANDBachelor’s Degree from an accredited Institution in Labor Studies, Industrial Labor Relations, or other related field as determined by CSEA, Inc.ORThree years’ experience in any one, or combination of the following areas:Union organizing, community organizing, labor relations or political campaignsORAn acceptable combination of education, training and experience as determined by CSEA.NOTE: Candidates must possess a valid New York State drivers’ license and car for business.
