The medical radiation physicist assistant is responsible for assisting the medical physicists with their duties in the clinic including:
The Medical Physicist Assistant performs patient-specific radiation measurements and calculations, performs quality assurance tests of photon and electron beam characteristics and mechanical characteristics of therapy equipment under the supervision of a medical physicist.
The Medical Physicist Assistant maintains appropriate proficiency in the use of radiation treatment machines, radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and related software.
Other responsibilities include review of daily output/dose measurements, review of maintenance reports, monthly calibration of therapy equipment, overseeing the installation of new equipment and acceptance testing of same, and establishing overall quality assurance mechanisms used in the department.
The Medical Physicist Assistant assists with radiation surveys of treatment rooms as required by the clinic's procedures and state and federal regulations, follows all medical physics quality assurance procedures and policies, and performs other duties as assigned.
As required by the Supervisor, the Medical Physicist Assistant also participates in meetings, special task groups, and/or procedures in Radiation Oncology.
The Medical Physicist Assistant must pass credentialing exams in each area of work after receiving training.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in medical physics
Clinical knowledge of radiation oncology
Less than one year of previous experience
Eligible for professional certification
