PRN Monitor Technician - Telemetry/Observation Unit (Tele/Obs)

30-bed Telemetry-Observation Unit providing care to the cardiac, the medical and the surgical patient We use an Interdisciplinary team approach to patient care Short length of stay for most patients EKG, ACLS, and residency classes are provided Individualized orientation program for each new member joining our team PRN - will need to work a min of 24 hours off shift per 6-week schedule 12-hour day/evening/night Weekend and Holiday as needed Shift and Weekend Differential Eligibility

Position Function: The Monitor Technician monitors patients' EKG waveforms, rhythms, and vital signs in a centralized monitoring station. The Monitor Technician provides the nurses and physicians with precise analysis of cardiac rhythms through oral communication and written documentation. The Monitor Technician detects abnormal pattern variances and notifies the primary RN immediately.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Job Specifics

1. Interprets patients EKG pattern.
2. Adjustments to rhythm alarms made in collaboration with bedside nurse.
3. Works closely with bedside nurse as medication adjustments are being implemented.
4. Communicates in a timely manner any aberrancies or arrhythmias to the primary RN and/or Resource Nurse, recognizing the significance of the interpretation and need for appropriate intervention.
5. Completes rhythm competencies as required and by due date.
6. Print and interpret rhythm strips every eight hours and place in telemetry log book. Identifying PR, QRS and QT intervals.
7. Print and interpret rhythm strips, legibly documents rhythm change or new occurrence and notify nursing personnel.
8. Ensure alarms are on and properly set at all times.
9. Responds appropriately to emergent rhythms.
10. Verifies correct patient information is entered into central monitor system to assure accuracy for recording rhythms
11. Maintains equipment operation and reports any malfunction to bio med department immediately
12. Completes assignments before end of shift, communicates outstanding issues to the next shift for follow up.
13. Able to communicate with the clinicians as requested.
14. Provides thorough reports of patient rhythm activity to the bedside nurse and/or resource nurse during intershift handoff.
15. Provides verbal report to oncoming monitor tech.
16. Maintains a safe environment in department for all parties
17. Demonstrates good hand washing techniques
18. Wears ID badge at chest level at all times
19. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned

Qualifications and Standards

Education: High school graduate. Completion of a medical assistant, EMT or related program with course work in medical terminology, anatomy, or cardiac rhythms and/or the equivalent in experience preferred. Successful completion of EKG class with minimum score of 80% required.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Experience in reading cardiac rhythms preferred.

Certifications/Licensure: None required.
