Salary Range ($89,000-$118,600) - Multiple factors, including Individual experience, skills, and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range. Variable pay may provide additional opportunities for financial awards. This job is eligible to participate in IP’s short–term incentive plan.

 

The Job You Will Perform:

The Valliant mill is a 5,000+ ton per day containerboard mill with 3 paper machines, 3 continuous digesters, 3 secondary fiber plants and a utilities/chemical recovery complex. It currently operates with over 350 mill employees, 150 contract maintenance employees, and 150 other contractors in a results oriented environment.

 

This position will report to the Process Control Manager in Valliant, Oklahoma. This individual will foster the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Valliant Mill primarily by implementing and improving control strategies, and by maintaining and improving control systems.  Control systems are broadly defined to include any closed loop control device independent of technology, including, but not limited to: DCS, PLC, QCS, Drives, Turbine Generator Control, individual PID controllers, sensors/actuators, and the communication devices and networks than link them together.

 

Key Accountabilities (include but not limited to):

Develop a deep understanding of the mill processes, controls, and control equipment, and be able to effectively communicate this information to others to improve quality, stabilize processes, and ultimately improve profitability. Lead/Support production and maintenance teams in troubleshooting issues including process system problems and quality issues, as well as aiding or leading process optimization efforts. Act as a mentor to transfer expertise to operations, maintenance, and engineering team members.  Assume ownership of overall control design including development of functional descriptions, Control System Implementation/programming, as well as check-out, commissioning, documenting, and startup support for new equipment and strategies. Assume ownership of control equipment by identifying obsolescence, improvement opportunities, and deficiencies.  Develop and champion solutions.   Become Competent in all current mill DCS/PLC programming and troubleshooting.  Manage contractors, especially those working on controls system or components.   Perform basic engineering calculations, investigations, and tasks as assigned.  Assume ownership of area Alarm Management activities. Assume ownership of area IEPM efforts. Assume ownership of Critical Loop Performance (CLPM) including loop optimization/tuning, and the associated reports. Develop new and optimize existing operator graphical interfaces. Troubleshoot Ethernet networks and configure switches. Troubleshoot and configure computing equipment.

 

The Skills You Will Bring:

Bachelor’s degree preferably in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Pulp & Paper Technology, or equivalent experience. Three years of engineering experience preferred. Possess good skills in written and oral communication, problem solving, time management, and conflict resolution.  Strong computer knowledge and skills that include experience with spreadsheets, word processing and computer aided drafting (AutoCAD loop sheets, P&IDs, Elementaries). Ability to excel with minimal supervision in a team environment.  Willing to work weekend duty on a rotating basis. Willing to work overtime or odd hours as required to meet goals, support operations during abnormal conditions, or to correct malfunctioning control systems or strategies.
