Purpose

To provide operations with basic control logic research and forcing on a day-to-day basis.  Ensures that force logs are updated properly and verifies with operations the validity of existing forces in the control system.  Modify control system logic in accordance with the needs and approval of operations.  Be able to upload/download control system programs used at the facility.  Be able to assist the electrical and instrumentation departments with I/O cabinet wiring troubleshooting.  Be able to modify the facilities console interface and basic maintenance of the operating system used.  Be able to troubleshoot all control system hardware and software used at the facility.  Be able to fully configure a control point from the field I/O device to the control room including any documentation software such as AutoCad for schematic revisions.

Essential Duties

Have a good understanding of advanced control functions (lookup tables, signal filtering, high/low selection, etc).             Backup and restore control system hard drives (PC’s and/or DCS systems where they apply). Maintain and/or modify control system hardware configurations (hard drives, memory, interface cards, etc). Have a good understanding of the control system’s operating system where applicable (Windows, VMS, etc). Install and uninstall any/all software packages used.  This includes acquiring software patches/fixes from the manufacturers. Use TDR, OTDR, and oscilloscope to trouble shoot control system communications systems and I/O. Assist and make recommendations in the design and layout of new control systems.  This includes all related schematics, hardware specifications, control schemes, and operator interface packages (HMI’s). Be aggressive in seeking new and better alternative control schemes (logic programming, HMI “look-and-feel”, field equipment, etc). This includes any related programming changes and interfacing with operations and any other effected department (E/I, engineering, etc). Analyze trend data to recommend changes to control scheme and/or field equipment. Have a good understanding of single, split ratio, and cascaded PID control loops and be able to tune these loops within satisfactory responses. Assist instrumentation and electricians when connecting field devices to the control system I/O panels for proper installation. Edit facilities drawings (P&ID’s, instrumentation, electrical) using the facilities standard electronic drafting software (AutoCad, MicroStation, etc) in accordance to field changes and/or redlined schematics.  This includes adhering to the facilities standards in layout, symbols, etc. Have a complete understanding of the control system topology and communications networks and protocols.  This includes all fiber optic, radio, and copper communications links. Have a basic understanding of AC and DC circuits (resistors, capacitors, diodes, snubber circuits, transformers, etc). Have a good understanding of motor starter circuits and related protection devices as per standards used at the facility (at minimum, 480-volt 3-phase starters). Have a fundamental understanding of any advanced control schemes (fuzzy logic, neural networks, multi-variable, etc) which may be used at the facility. Have an advanced understanding of the facility’s process and related equipment and the interactions of the equipment within the process.

Training & Experience

Minimum 3 years industrial work place experience in operations, maintenance, or college degree. Computer, electrical, or instrumentation background beneficial. Organizational skills to coordinate and track multiple tasks. Communications skills to deal effectively with operations and maintenance personnel.

Working Conditions

 

Carry test equipment to all locations requiring physical fitness. Bend and lift up to 40 pounds. Climb stairs up to 175 feet. Work in close proximity to running equipment, requiring no health record of dizzy spells, recent seizures, significant hearing loss or uncorrected vision.
