Basic Qualifications
For this position to be successful, the incumbent should have:
High School Degree or GED equivalent from an accredited institution, or minimum 3 years of process technician or process engineer experience. Minimum 3 years of experience in a metal manufacturing facility. This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.Preferred Qualifications
For this position to be successful, preference is given to candidates with:
A Bachelor’s degree in Quality, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution. Minimum 3 years of experience working with product function, testing, design, continuous improvement, and process control tools including SPC, Control Plans, Gage R & R’s, and other statistical techniques. Minimum 3 years of experience with statistical experimental design techniques. Previous experience in a unionized environment.Working Conditions
This position involves minimal to moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is normally performed in a shared work environment divided between the shop floor and an interior work space. While not exposed to hazardous materials, this position requires wearing full PPE to protect from mobile equipment and hot materials when on the shop floor.
This position requires anywhere from light to moderate physical activity, such as walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, as well as some lifting and engaging all motions necessary to efficiency perform product and equipment inspections.
This position also requires a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule including working the occasional weekend and be responsive after normal working hours for support.
Primary Purpose of Job
Under the direction of either the Chief Metallurgical Engineer/LAIP Quality Lead or Chief Quality Engineer/SAIP Quality Lead this position is responsible for providing process and material development, new product introduction, and product design services to ensure that the quality of forgings meet customer, governmental, and Howmet specifications. They provide technical support to metallurgical product and process controls to ensure Howmet remains a viable supplier in the industries that it serves. This position does not directly supervise other personnel. The incumbent communicates continually with all levels of personnel across all departments at Cleveland Operations, as well as with Quality Department personnel at other Howmet locations. Externally, they communicate with customers, suppliers, and contractors.
Accountability Objectives
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Providing product and process control support for all activities related to forgings. Coordinating and conducting assigned development programs to facilitate continuous improvement initiatives that lead to improved products, processes, and technology. Identifying cost-savings and process improvement projects and moving them from concept to implementation. Directing, developing, and maintaining processes, specifications, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and Howmet quality requirements. Interfacing with customer representatives on Howmet product, process, and metallurgical quality issues. Monitoring and interfacing with outside suppliers for compliance to stated requirements including assigning, determining, and providing corrective actions, as required. Acting as project manager for multifunctional teams on process and product improvement activities. Assessing instability in forging processes through analysis of non-conforming material data. Utilizing stability tools for processes through analysis of non-conforming material data. Troubleshooting issues through validation of critical process variables and recipe management. Supporting operations to improve quality process reliability and improvement. Maintaining and improving floor level work instructions for process improvements, including improving line performance and quality throughput, reducing changeover times, reducing equipment downtime and scrap, improving the plant’s overall approach to preventative and predictive maintenance. Teaming with the Metallurgical Engineering, Estimating, Production, and Design Engineering Departments during new item design and launch to achieve first pass yield of 100% in FAI. Supporting efforts to train production staff on process basics including in-process inspection, indication recognition, and process stability. Establishing and improving work instructions to ensure the realization of EHS safety objectives. Troubleshooting, managing, and implementing technical inputs for incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action. Assuming single point accountability for the Cleveland Operations Material Disposition Review (MDR) process, by making the appropriate decision and implementing the related process for each product whether that be reprocessing or scrapping, while adhering to Howmet quality standards, customer requirements, and ensuring cost and time savings. Performing other duties as assigned.
