Role Purpose

Leads process improvement initiatives to improve existing products and manufacturing processes for extruded and injection molded products at the Durham Campus. Develop and integrate new technologies to the manufacturing environment. Support the daily response to operational upsets and champion long-term solutions and systems improvements to enhance the safety, quality, productivity, and reliability of manufacturing systems. Manage capital and non-capital projects from concept through implementation including determining project scope and resource needs, establishing process and equipment specifications, completing DOEs, and writing and executing validation protocols. Actively support, improve, and ensure compliance to the site business and quality management systems through documentation preparation, process auditing, and completion of corrective actions in response to customer complaints and audit findings. This position works closely with operations management, functional leaders, engineers, and external stakeholders to establish work priorities and work assignments across the various functional groups.

Description of Work

Collaboration

Actively collaborate with other site engineers, operations personnel, and suppliers to maintain and improve operations. Work with operations and technicians to gather support need information and provide updates on process status.

Technical Ownership 

Provides technical leadership in assigned processes Act to continuously improve and expand the site’s core process capabilities and performance through process enhancements, experimentation, project identification & completion. Plan, specify, and implement process improvements machine modifications, and tooling improvements. Advocate prioritization of process improvement and cost reduction projects based on analysis of process data.   Identify and implement modifications to production equipment and processes to improve overall equipment efficiency (OEE) by improving process yield, improving production rate, and improving machine availability.

Troubleshooting/Engineering Tools

Quickly respond to production and process upsets, troubleshoot production issues, diagnose problems, and implement corrective action (machine fix, process change, etc.) to reestablish operations. Use of engineering first principles to drive mechanistic understanding and root cause identifications. Identify processes operating outside of validated state through production audits and take corrective actions to return processes to normal operation. Look for and develop robust processes & standardized approaches for machine designs and work processes via use of tools such as PQA & Six sigma / Lean standardization efforts in assigned processes. Use Six Sigma tools for process capability studies, statistical process control determination, measurement systems analysis, and development of process controls systems. Work with operations to further develop SPC/SQC for process discipline and control (PD/PC).

Quality

Documents changes via the engineering log, change control process.  Validate production processes as needed using site validation processes to establish and implement validation master plans and document validation results.  Requirements BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Plastics / Materials Science or related discipline.  Minimum of 0-2 years’ experience in an engineering or technical role in a manufacturing or R&D environment.

The range for this position is $69,791.00 - $95,963.00  assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
