Patterson-UTI’s Drilling Digital Solutions team works on digitalization initiatives, collecting large amounts of data from our distributed assets and perform advanced data analytics, leveraging big data, web development and AWS cloud services. The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for gathering comprehensive requirements working with stakeholders and customers, designing user interface for software applications that are used at the drilling rig locations and in the cloud. They will play an important role in creating the high-level design artifacts with a passion for building great products with good usability. The ideal candidate will be responsible for driving the vision, strategy, and development of our software products. As a key player in our product team, you will work closely with stakeholders, customers, and cross-functional teams to ensure our products meet market needs and deliver exceptional user experiences.
This role will work under the direction of the Product Development Manager – Digital Solutions.
Detailed Description:
Collaborate with marketing, engineering and software development teams in identifying and creating requirements for new applications Collaborate with developers and cross-functional teams in creating new web, mobile and rig applications, improvements to existing applications and additional KPI calculations Oversee requirements discovery, solution design, user story writing, feature development, and user acceptance testing Manage product development backlog; prioritizing requested features based on customer demand and importance Assist with design and development of visualizations, controls applications, customer web portal elements, and other internal initiatives. Provide ongoing support to the production applications, including troubleshooting reported issues and identifying areas of improvement based on user feedback Assist engineers in analyzing large datasets and developing drilling visuals and reports in software tools like Power BI Aid in development of supporting technical documentation, including design specifications, test procedures, training materials, and technical presentations Ability to interact with multiple levels within an organization.

Excellent analytical skills, able to think strategically and translate concepts into action plans and track results Passion for building great products with a keen eye for UX and usability. Simplify and explain complex topics for the purposes of coaching and training Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong computer skills, including MS Office Suite as well as use of smart phones, laptops, and tablets. Able to learn data analytics tools like Tableau, Power BI and Excel to perform data analytics Strong understanding of software development processes and technologies. Ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority. Able to work both independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously to meet challenging deadlines Able and willing to visit a drilling rig location on a semi-regular basis to gain subject matter knowledge (approximately 25%)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline 2+ years of experience in the oil & gas industry
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on analytical experience in either Excel, Python, or Power BI is very helpful Experience working in an Agile development environment 2+ years’ experience in the drilling industry 1+ years’ experience with software product design, release planning, and rolloutAdditional Details:
The Product Development Engineer must work with an emphasis on individual safety and safety for others, including coworkers and third parties. Compliance to Patterson’s safety policies and procedure is mandatory. This position could require an occasional visit to the rigs, yards and field offices. Work is primarily in a climate controlled / office environment with minimal safety / health hazard potential. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, or walk with occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from floor, bending and frequent near vision use for reading and use of computer, telephone and other office equipment. Occasional travel to other Company offices and work sites, often in remote locations, is required during normal operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather), and employee will be expected to properly use designated personal protective equipment (PPE).
