The Product Sustaining Engineer supports Product Engineering and Production teams by leading projects that maintain, enhance, and optimize existing product designs. This role ensures product reliability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness while driving continuous improvement and problem resolution.
Responsibilities Lead product revisions, modifications, and cost-reduction initiatives, directing CAD Designers in the preparation of detailed design drawings.Troubleshoot vendor and production issues related to product design conformance and specifications.Analyze the impact of heat pump pool heater design changes on:Refrigerant flow, heat transfer, efficiency (COP), and environmental factorsComponent selection (e.g., condensers, evaporators, compressors, fans, valves, thermostats)Collaborate with Heat Pump Product Design Engineers for technical alignment.Evaluate gas-fired pool heater design changes, including:Ignition characteristics, exhaust emissions, thermal efficiency, and regulatory complianceComponent selection (e.g., blowers, ignitors, thermostats, electromechanical switches)Consult with Gas Product Engineers to ensure product integrity.Review vendor drawings, specification control documents, and product certifications for compliance and accuracy.Partner with production teams to define and resolve manufacturing and design challenges.Manage product maintenance teams, assigning projects to CAD Designers, Lab Technicians, and junior engineers, resolving technical issues, and reviewing completed work.Work closely with the Quality Department to:Identify opportunities for product improvement based on customer feedback and rejection trends.Review and resolve quality inspection reports to drive corrective actions.Participate in engineering and design review meetings, contributing technical expertise and innovative solutions.Prepare technical documentation, including:Qualification test procedures, DFMEAs, installation manuals, and engineering reports.Present project updates, challenges, and recommendations to cross-functional teams and leadership.Collaborate with certifying agencies to obtain and maintain regulatory product approvals.Coordinate with Product Management, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams to support product lifecycle management and sustainability initiatives. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited four-year university.Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.Technical Skills (Required for Successful Execution of Duties)Strong understanding of fuel gas combustion appliances, refrigeration systems, heat pumps, and heat transfer.Familiarity with test agencies and industry standards (CSA, ETL, UL, ANSI, NSF, AHRI).Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, including:Sheet metal, plastic molding, metal casting, and coatings.Ability to apply scientific and logical principles to a wide range of intellectual and practical engineering problems.Proficiency in mathematical and statistical analysis, including:Frequency distribution, test reliability/validity, analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.Experience with engineering software tools, including:Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project)AS/400SolidWorks (preferred)Finite Element Analysis (FEA)Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)Attributes (Recommended for Success in the Role)Accountability – Takes responsibility and ownership of actions and results.Accuracy – Ability to perform tasks with precision and attention to detail.Adaptability – Thrives in a changing work environment and can adjust strategies accordingly.Decision-Making – Demonstrates sound judgment while following company policies and procedures.Detail-Oriented – Capable of recognizing and addressing intricate details of a project.Business Acumen – Understands and applies key business concepts to engineering challenges.Communication Skills –Oral: Able to convey ideas clearly and effectively through verbal communication.Written: Able to write technical reports and documentation concisely and accurately.Persistence – Maintains focus and determination to complete tasks despite obstacles.Project Management – Ability to effectively plan, organize, and direct projects to completion.#LI-EP1
