Professional Driver Instructor



 

GFL Environmental is looking for a Professional Driver Instructor to join our team in Coquitlam, BC!

This position will have an anticipated start date of April 2025.

The Professional Driver Instructor will be responsible for developing a thorough program understanding the Company’s transportation requirements, EHS and NSC responsibilities. The successful individual will review and evaluate company procedures and recommend training needs, and plan and schedule appropriate driver education/re-education. They will ensure compliance with all government related programs specific to mode and direction of related haulage.

Job Description:

• Consistent review of all drivers, ensuring ongoing training requirements and procedural implementation are achieved.

• Assist with GFL recommend equipment safety standards; implement and monitor driver usage.

• Act as a direct liaison between NSC Compliance, EHS policies and managers/supervisors regarding driver requirements.

• Ongoing “sit-in” driver training to assess any poor driving habits, excessive braking, possibly fuel cost savings, etc.

• Conduct regular driver reviews and mandatory route-rides.

• Tracking of ongoing driver issues and communicating with direct LOB supervisors for corrective actions needed.

• Direct communication with other departments to ensure proper ongoing service and upkeep of all units including safety devices, vehicle lighting, warning devices, fittings, safety supplies.

• Ensure a healthy and safe working environment for all workers, reporting any issues immediately to your direct supervisor.

• Ensure company policy, systems, and industry related training is delivered to all drivers.

• Perform Accident/Incident Investigations when company vehicles are involved in on road accidents.

• Provide or arrange training for drivers to ensure they are properly servicing customers based on established requirements.

• Other duties as assigned.

Safety:

• Promote the companies safety program that seeks to prevent accidents, avoid injuries, and recognize safe employees.

• Investigate accidents and prepare necessary paperwork in a timely manner.

• Ensure driver observations are completed on a routine basis.

• Schedule, plan, and conduct safety meetings (Weekly). -Toolbox talks/Uploaded to Safety program

Additional Responsibilities:

• Ensure all employees are dressed in the proper uniform/PPE provided by GFL Environmental.

• Conform in all respects with applicable federal, provincial, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and other orders and to all company policies, procedures, and directives from supervisors.

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Requirements:

• Valid BC Class 3 driver's license and a clean drivers abstract.  MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) Certification will be considered an asset.

• Preferred 2-3 years driver trainer experience.  Experience working with Side loaders, ASL, Rear Packers, Over the Tops, Front End, and Roll Off vehicles will be an asset.

• General understanding of, WHMIS, and the Highway Traffic Act.

• Able to perform a pre and post trip inspection and accident investigations.

• Previous operations, transportation, waste management experience preferred.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to plan, prioritize and execute against tight timelines.

• Proficient with database, spreadsheet, and word processing computer skills within a Microsoft environment.

• Willing to work flexible hours with travel throughout the region.

Physical/Mental Demands:

• Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and climb.

• Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

• Work in office environment 20% of the time. With 80% on road time.

• Noise level is usually moderate.

• Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions frequently.

• Travel required throughout BC Region

Ability to Work within a team environment between multiple managers/supervisors.

Cross training will be a pre-requisite to provide holiday and sickness coverage for various line of business. Ie: dispatching, Potential driving occasionally, and supervisory coverage in designated areas.
