Registered as a Professional Geologist by the Arkansas State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists. Degreed geologists that are not yet registered as a professional geologist will be considered for the geologist level pay grade for a GS07 - $41,348.50.
Experience in hydrology, hydrogeology, and/or geochemistry preferred.
Extensive experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.
Good writing and communication skills preferred.
Experience with Arkansas geology preferred.
Registered as a Professional Geologist by the Arkansas State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists.

Summary
The Professional Geologist is responsible for conducting and overseeing scientific research and analysis of rocks and minerals and monitoring permit facilities for compliance. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Plans and prepares geological maps, cross-sections, charts, technical reports and publications pertaining to geologic resources, using results from field work and laboratory and literature research. Analyzes and interprets geological, geochemical, and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, well logs, bore holes, aerial photographs, and geologic maps. Reviews pre-applications for permitted facilities for adequacy and compliance with state regulations and monitors sites after application is approved. Identifies geologic risks and provides advice on ways in which geologic damage from environmental or geohazards can be mitigated. Plans and conducts geological, geochemical, geohazards, and geophysical field studies and surveys to provide information for use in regional development, site selection, and the development of public works projects. Locates and identifies potential resources of natural gas, oil, coal, minerals, aggregates, and ground water using aerial photographs, charts, surveys, and geological research tools. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of geology theories and practices. Knowledge of the methods and techniques for conducting petroleum, mineral, and water surveys, tests, and analyses. Knowledge of mineral identification, geologic mapping, and geologic laboratory procedures and instrumentation. Knowledge and proficiency of Geographic Information System (GIS) and geologic software. Knowledge of state laws and regulations governing geological activities. Ability to conduct geological investigations and analyses and compile data. Ability to write technical reports and geologic publications, and to make presentations. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in geology or a related field; plus three years of experience with scientific research or a related field; CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: Registered as a Professional Geologist by the Arkansas State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
