Professor of Public Policy, Academic General Faculty
University of Virginia
The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Professor of Practice in Public Policy at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, depending upon qualifications. This is a full-time 9-month, non-tenure-accruing faculty position to begin in August 2025 (but open to other starting dates). Candidates must have a distinguished record of public service and leadership related to Congressional and/or state legislative politics. Applicants from other related areas, such as federal agencies and intergovernmental relations, are also encouraged to apply.
As a Professor of Practice, candidates should be interested in engagement that contributes to improving public understanding and the quality of leadership and public policy on major issues facing the U.S. Congress or other legislative bodies, while advancing the mission of the Batten School. Engagement can take a wide variety of forms, including but not limited to advocacy, outreach, and public speaking; conducting and publishing policy-relevant research; convening conferences, workshops, and roundtable discussions; and holding strategic advisory positions; etc. Candidates should also be interested in teaching leadership and public policy, providing networking opportunities for students, and instructing undergraduate or graduate students on topics like the legislative process, major contemporary policy issues, and leadership skills.
Professional experience or training in legislative affairs, policy analysis, implementation, assessment, and/or advocacy is required. Recognition for outstanding achievement or qualifying terminal degree(e.g., J.D., M.D., and Ph.D.) in the field is required. Teaching or related experience (e.g., leading trainings, management, etc.) and a record of public impact publications (e.g., policy development and briefs, advocacy reports, testimony, scholarship, etc.) are highly desirable.
Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation's top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous education in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on acquiring leadership skills. Our faculty includes political scientists, economists, behavioral scientists, and professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The Batten School currently offers an MPP degree, an undergraduate major, a minor in public policy and leadership, and multiple dual degree programs with other UVA units.
The successful candidate will be asked to teach multiple undergraduate or graduate courses on major policy issues or leadership skills and mentor students on policy projects for real-world clients. This position is typically a three-year renewable appointment. We are also open to exploring shorter appointments; specific terms are dependent on qualifications, experience, and rank. Salaries, benefits, and support for research and pedagogic innovation are highly competitive. Please note that this position requires regular in-person work at UVA’s campus in Charlottesville, VA and is not eligible for remote work.
