Attention: This position is located in Craven County, North Carolina.

 

The Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) grant project was awarded from NC DHHS to the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Program in 2023.  PREP is designed to educate adolescents on both abstinence and contraception to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS, as well as providing education on adulthood preparation subjects. In North Carolina the PREP initiative is called PREPare for Success. Duke’s PREP is known as the Duke Teen Health Club. Staff may commute from neighboring counties and some work will be hybrid. Candidates living and/or connected to Craven County NC are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Occupational Summary

Overall project goals are to: Improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes, promote positive youth development and teach adulthood preparation subjects including adolescent development, healthy life skills, healthy relationships, financial literacy, educational and career success, and parent-child communication.

 

Plan, coordinate, and administer PREP activities within Craven County North Carolina. Responsible for implementing new teen pregnancy prevention intervention (TPPI) to two community-based sites in Craven County. Attend training in one of two TPP curricula. May also attend trainings on topics including: Positive Youth Development, Group Facilitation, Mindfulness, Human Sexuality, Adolescent Development, Sexually Transmitted Infection/HIV, Birth Control Methods as well as trainings on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), and other topics to address the needs of adolescents.

 

Update the Duke Teen Health Club Resource Guide as needed. Gather information on youth access to care and inform youth of available local agencies and organizations’ services including health department, social services, rape crisis, mental health/substance use, LGBTQIA+ support, tutoring, food pantry and other services as needed.

 

Responsible for developing a shared vision among program partners, community leaders, parents, and youth to enhance the future of the young people in Craven County. Build relationships with community members, organizations, and agencies. Lead outreach, mobilization, and dissemination of the Duke Teen Health Club program to the broader community. Applicants must be comfortable and enjoy engaging with middle and high school aged youth. Applicants must also be comfortable educating youth on topics related to sexual health and comprehensive sexuality education.

 

 

Work Performed

Assist in operational and programmatic decisions with PREP team that have a significant impact on the successful achievement of program strategies and objectives under supervision of Youth Program Lead; assist in the development and coordination of implementation of teen pregnancy prevention curricula and PREP-Craven community engagement. Plan and facilitate all TPP and Adulthood Preparation Subject sessions on a weekly basis at two sites in Craven County.

 

Plan, coordinate, and administer activities of assigned programs to include developing and implementing procedures, processes, services and systems.

Oversee communication efforts with community-based partners including, but not limited to, setting up meetings with CBO administration; engaging administration throughout the program, updating administration on program success.

 

Maintain the PREP state database and gather youth demographic information from CBO for state database. Record all Duke Teen Health Club session dates, times, and youth attendance in database. Administer PREP pre and post surveys to all consenting youth enrolled in Duke Teen Health Club. Provide satisfaction surveys for youth midway and at the end of each cohort. Maintain privacy of all sensitive information and follow Duke protocols for working with vulnerable populations and for storage of surveys.

 

Chair and attend quarterly meetings of the PREP Craven Community Advisory Council (CAC). Develop a youth engagement strategy and invite youth to join the CAC. Plan to develop a robust Youth Advisory Council in the next two years. Rejuvenate relationships with CAC members, assisting with planning and coordinating CAC in-service trainings and meetings, and providing TPP curricula for CAC and community review.

 

Budget for, and coordinate Duke Teen Health Club activities including purchase of snacks and other items needed for weekly TPP sessions; develop and

coordinate new ideas and concepts for program themes, materials, and resources to

supplement, expand or replace existing program components, including planning and hosting Parent/Caregiver Nights, and disseminating program information in program service area.

 

Coordinate and assist with the development of public relations activities between PREP-Craven and community members to include conceptualizing and writing newsletters, promotional materials, publications, press releases, PSAs, ads and fliers. Develop plans and schedules for release of publicity materials. Develop content and manage program social media pages through approved platforms as a method of community and participant engagement, submitting drafts for approval to Youth Program Lead. Develop plans and schedule for release of publicity including social media posts.

 

Maintain liaison with other programs, offices, and departments at Duke to coordinate program business and to accomplish program objectives; interface with external organizations as appropriate to ensure cooperative efforts are enhanced and available resources are utilized.

 

Monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds as appropriate focusing on PREP expenditures for participant incentives, snacks, Parent Nights, Field Trip and Graduation Celebration for each club.

 

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education/Training/Experience:

 

Work requires a bachelor’s degree in public health, psychology, social work, sociology or related health field OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Work requires one year of experience to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events. Three years of experience is preferred.

Skills:

Must be computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and capability to learn new data management programs.

Strong instructional and training skills preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability to manage time efficiently and meet deadlines. Independent and creative thinker. Ability to work with individuals (youth and adults) from diverse cultural, ethnic, and social groups.
