Program Coordinator

Job Description:

The Program Coordinator for the Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC) will focus on programming for undergraduate students by collaborating with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to enhance Brown’s excellence through equity and justice. The Program Coordinator is responsible for developing and stewarding existing BCSC programs that increase awareness of Center programming, resources, professional team members, and history.

Additionally, this role in supporting and collaborating with the Assistant Director will connect curricular and co-curricular learning for all BCSC undergraduate students. This role educates the campus community, institution and division leaders advocating for the academic and social needs of students of color, and facilitates opportunities for intellectual and personal community building in support of Brown’s and the Division of Campus Life’s mission.

The Program Coordinator provides significant content and logistical support for the Third World Transition Program (TWTP) and the MPC Peer Counselor Program (MPC). The Program Coordinator manages Center events, multimedia, and assists in coordinating BCSC administrative operations and external events. This role will work in collaboration with the Associate Dean and Director of the center to evaluate, assess, and co-support the BCSC Speaker Series. This role leads closely with the current Programs Coordinators across at the Center and across the division to support engaging and intentional student centered programming experiences. 

This role is essential in providing central front desk, office and communication management including recruiting, hiring, training, and mentoring of hourly student staff, supporting the BCSC Center-wide operational, administrative, and communication needs, and ensuring the Center is open and operating efficiently during all University business hours. Additionally, this role will work in collaboration with the division’s central Communications team to develop communications strategies and support.

Job Qualifications 

Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 1 or 2 years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in an academic setting is strongly preferred. 

Understanding of Brown’s curricular philosophy is preferred. 

Understanding of issues of social justice, especially in regards to race and ethnicity and how they intersect with other social identities (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, class). 

Exceptional event planning or program development experience preferred.

Experience supervising students is preferred. Ability to coordinate the work of others necessary. 

Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. 

Strong computer aptitude for learning new software and problem solving required. Proficiency in word processing  and spreadsheets required.

Flexible to change and interpret multiple tasks simultaneously while actively managing a project. 

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required.

Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
