Position Summary

The Rice Synthetic Biology Institute (RSBI) seeks to catalyze collaborative research in synthetic biology and its translation into technologies that benefit society. This Institute serves to strengthen the synthetic biology community at Rice, to connect it with regional industrial, government, and academic partners, and to engage with global leaders across all areas of synthetic biology. RSBI is home to the highly prestigious Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology (SSPB) graduate training program. Reporting to the Executive Director, the SSPB Program Manager implements and administers the vision, strategy, and goals of large complex interdisciplinary research and educational programs.

Ideal Candidate Statement: 

The ideal candidate will have a master’s or bachelor’s degree, with at least three years of experience in academic program administration. They should possess excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and be proficient in multi-tasking under pressure and engaging effectively on social media platforms. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new software is preferable. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively, with a keen attention to detail and a service-oriented mindset. Preference will be given to those with a Master's, project planning experience, academic advising experience and the ability to handle sensitive situations diplomatically.

Workplace Requirements

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. [Work from home 2 days a week]. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Annual Hiring Range: This position has an expected minimum salary of $63,100.

Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. 

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree 3 years related experience in the following: Academic program administration in a higher education environment Academic advising experience

Skills:

Advanced problem-solving skills Strong verbal and written communications skills Ability to work well under pressure and manage projects simultaneously Strong organizational and time management skills  Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite   Ability to learn and implement program management software if needed Strong data analysis skills  Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and schedules  Adept at problem solving, creating contingency plans and handling issues when necessary Strong service orientation and attention to detail

Essential Functions:

Program Planning and Administration:

Creates short-term and long-term plans to achieve the mission and objectives for the assigned research and educational programs. Develops, implements, administers, and evaluates programs by conducting research activities, collecting and analyzing data, creating reports, reviewing trends, and making recommendations for improvements aligned with the program’s mission. Develops and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.

Academic Program Management (for applicable programs):

Responsible for graduate student recruitment and admissions, application system management, student records, curriculum support, and coordinating the accreditation process. Manages scholarships, fellowships, travel awards and monitors student progress.

Marketing, Website, and Social Media Management:

Maintains the program's website and social media platforms, ensuring content is up-to-date and effectively communicates the program's offerings. Develops and implements strategies to market the SSPB program, increasing visibility and engagement across digital platforms. Represents the SSPB program at conferences and events for undergraduate recruitment into the graduate program, promoting the program and building connections with potential candidates.

Events and Community Engagement:

Manages and coordinates various events, including recruitment activities, graduation ceremonies, workshops, and outreach educational programs such as high school initiatives. Ensures seamless execution of events to promote program visibility, student engagement, and community involvement. Develops and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships and fundraising / funding

General Operations:

Oversees and contributes to the day-to-day activities of program functions, ensuring smooth operation and achievement of program goals. Performs all other duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the program.

Additional Functions:

Serves as an initial point person for correspondence and communication across multiple programs Oversees and contributes to the day-to-day activities of program functions  Collaborates with faculty and/or staff leadership to design, develop, and implement new activities, curricula, and programs Develops and implements program protocol, procedures, and operating policies Maintains tracking systems for program-related presentations, publications, and other outputs Supports program assessment by collecting, analyzing and communicating data Procures materials and supplies, as needed
