The New York Foundling’s Mentored Internship Program provides opportunities for young people in foster care to gain real-world work experience and career skills through supported internships. Interns recruited from our foster care programs work as Project Assistants in various departments of The Foundling, integrated with other staff members. Career readiness training and mentoring can
make a powerful difference for young people raised in foster care, who have unequal access to the financial, practical, and social supports that many young adults can expect from their parents as they explore the work world. Each intern is individually matched with a Mentor/Supervisor who trains them in skills needed for their tasks, as well as more broadly transferrable work skills and behaviors. Mentor/Supervisors also provide weekly formal supervision sessions.
Salary $16.00
ResponsibilitiesInterns will engage in peer group meetings discussing career issues such as professionalism and critical thinking, and provide a forum for mutual support. Interns also participate in resume-writing workshops, mock interviews, seminars on esteem building, and training in navigating online resources such as O*NET, Indeed, and Workforce1. Peer group meetings are also the setting for an end-of internship project collaboratively chosen, planned, and implemented by interns. Long-term career planning is integrated into every step of the internship, both through biweekly individual career coaching and through a series of group
discussions:
Intern Corner gives interns the opportunity to build skills inpublic speaking, presentation, and self-advocacy by speaking about
what they have learned in the internship and connecting these
lessons to their goals and the path ahead.
Mentor Corner mobilizes mentors to share meaningful careerexperiences and advice.
Career Corner features professionals in various positions, primarily drawn from The Foundling’s Junior Board, to introduce
interns to diverse career possibilities.
The Mentored Internship Program is open to teens and young adults ages 16 to 21
who are in The Foundling’s foster care programs, engaging up to 20 young people
per year.
