Project Engineer - Materials & Process Development

We are seeking a Project Engineer in our Development Engineering team at our Philadelphia, PA facility where we develop and produce precision patterned products.  This position will perform engineering activities for design, development, and implementation of new products and manufacturing processes. This role will support and interact with other project engineers, program management, and operations personnel on assigned projects related to process and materials development.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for product design and development activities on assigned projects; ensures product design meets customer specifications; develops design documentation, test procedures, Bills of Materials, and manufacturing work instructions as directed by engineering management. Resolves technical issues as they arise during fabrication with assistance from manufacturing engineering, quality engineering and operations personnel; identifies root causes of manufacturing problems using analytical techniques; provides clear and concise corrective action reports. Thoroughly documents new product designs and manufacturing processes. Before being used on production parts, assures all process changes are well thought out, documented and communicated to all levels. Assists training of all operators, technicians, and engineers on new manufacturing processes and process changes.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, materials, or manufacturing engineering, or a related discipline OR 4+ years of relevant experience  Previous experience in an engineering development role Experience working with ceramics a plus

Skills

Strong verbal and written technical communication skills Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet software, including MS Word, Excel, and some CAD (SolidWorks preferred), to support requirement for technical reports and analytical studies Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills Strong organization skills and attention to details required Ability and desire to work in an adaptable work environment

Working Conditions

Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary Interaction with team members and external contacts is a regular part of the job May require occasional overtime and flexibility in work hours to accommodate the site’s needs

Physical Requirements

Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or conducting meetings Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents Occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks Ability to communicate verbally and in writing Mobility within the office environment to attend meetings or interact with colleagues

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to attend scheduled training, follow the site EHS procedures and Corporate EHS standards. This includes the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job responsibilities. The employee will follow all safety and environmental procedures are consistently. The employee will support Health & Safety Officer by providing technical support for specific situations. They will ensure that risk assessments are performed, proper training, work instructions, required PPE is available, and will monitor compliance. All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
