Primary Role
**This role has a flexible work location, to be based in any American Water office in NJ or Eastern PA.**
The Project Manager will be responsible for working with the IT function to develop engineering technology solutions, and then implement them across the engineering function. This includes, in coordination with IT, the overall project management, coordination, implementation, execution, control and closure of engineering technology implementation initiatives from defining business requirements, program execution and delivery, and confirmation that project goals have been met. Based on the initiative assigned, Project Manager will leverage appropriate delivery framework to provide business value with focus on speed to deliver.

Key Accountabilities Lead planning and or implementation of assigned implementation projects. Facilitate the definition of project mission, goals, tasks and resource requirements. Translate business strategy into proposed implementation options, costs and schedules for final project plan reviews, approvals and execution. Use disciplined project management methodology to execute projects that adhere to guidelines and deliver within cost and schedule. Deliver all projects on time, within budget and meeting the desired outcomes and business requirements. Track project milestones, anticipating risks & issues, proactive risk mitigation and making recommendations to business and IT partners to achieve successful outcomes. Develop methods to monitor project or area progress and provide corrective supervision if necessary. Manage project budget and resource allocation. Strong cross-business unit / functional IT communication, influencing and negotiation to drive project results. Develop and maintain detailed project plan and charter. Effectively manage selected vendors, review their billings and ensure integrity of their deliverables. Work cross-functionally to solve problems and implement changes. Follow defined agreed upon project management methodology’s and agreed upon PMO processes. Communicate project progress by producing project reports to provide timely and accurate project status and decision support information to project team, department and management, Steering Committee and PMO. Ensuring project closure including completion of lessons learned and required documentation. Partners with the Change Management and Communication resources to enable successful rollout and adoption of technology. Knowledge/Skills Strong process, project, and program management skills. Strong quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving). Excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations). Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting). Leadership presence (e.g., ability to deal effectively and maintain collaborative relationships with Company senior management and other key internal and external stakeholders). Ability to influence across the organization to drive operational work and resource planning activities. Demonstrated ability to effectively problem solve routine and non-routine issues, developing possible solutions to problems and challenges. Ability to execute with urgency, while also maintaining project management discipline and stakeholder engagement. Financial analysis skill, including budget management, business modeling, and basic accounting knowledge. Knowledge or well-demonstrated ability to quickly understand company’s digital transformation of engineering functions’ objectives. Experience in managing projects related with complex utility solutions along with implementation experience of solutions such as listed below is a plus. Water/wastewater pipeline network risk tools Engineering design tools Engineering planning tools Engineering survey tools (Laser Scan / GPR / GNSS / UAS, etc.) Geographic Information Systems Django (GeoDjango), Python, JavaScript (Leaflet, OpenLayers, CartoDB.js, Mapbox.js), GeoServer, Mapnik, ArcGIS Server Understands the available technology tools with respect to business value, complexity, functions, and standards. Familiarity with Smartsheet, Trello, Jira, MS Suite and similar project management toolsets to manage project tracking, key performance indicators, project budget, resources, and timelines. Strong knowledge and application of various software development life cycles and techniques (e.g., waterfall and agile).Experience/Education 5+ years’ experience in project management/product development, business systems analysis, software development or deployment. Implementation experience in leading technology solutions for infrastructure asset management and engineering design. Experienced in working in a rapidly changing and ambiguous work environment. Experience with IT SDLC methodologies and delivering projects using a combination of waterfall and agile delivery methods. Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Computer Science, Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems, or equivalent relevant work experience.
Certifications & Licenses
PMP/PMI-ACP/Scrum Master/Agile Mythology certified preferred.
