Job Description
The Project Manager for the Lands Department is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and managing NANA’s input on projects utilizing NANA lands and projects of interest to the lands department. This includes overseeing, coordinating and managing NANA input on environmental assessments, and NANA sponsored projects. The Project Manager will work closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to ensure the successful execution of projects that align with NANA’s mission which includes protection and enhancement of NANA’s lands with subsistence use as the highest priority.
This position may be based at NANA's Corporate Office in Kotzebue, AK, or remotely from any of the NANA villages within the NANA Region, subject to candidate qualifications and company approval.
Responsibilities
Project Planning and Management
Coordinate input on environmental assessments and environmental impact assessments related to projects of interest and projects on or adjacent to NANA lands.
Develop comprehensive project plans, including scope, objectives, timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
Lead and manage NANA’s formal input on permitting requests and consultations utilizing in-house data and feedback from key stakeholders.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as environmental, legal, government affairs, and technical experts, to ensure project success.
Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and resolve issues that arise during project execution.
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including landowners, government agencies, community groups, and other partners for the Lands Department’s input on permitting activities.
Ensure all projects comply with NANA’s land use policies and any applicable regulations, and environmental standards.
May organize and facilitate meetings, shareholder engagement, and workshops to ensure stakeholder input and project alignment when needed for land management and third-party permitting activities.
Regulatory Compliance and Reporting
Work with the Resource Protection Program and other members of the team to ensure that all NANA Land-related projects adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, including environmental laws and NANA’s land-use permits.
Compile reports on NANA land use in collaboration with members of the Lands department.
Budgeting and Financial Management
Develop and manage project budgets, monitor expenditures, and report financial performance.
Ensure the efficient use of resources, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize project outcomes.
Documentation and Reporting
Utilize NANA Lands’ digital filing system to maintain accurate records of project activities, including contracts, reports, and communication logs.
Prepare regular status reports highlighting progress, challenges, and recommendations.
Ensure proper documentation for project close-out and post-project evaluations.
Team Leadership and Collaboration
Supervise project teams, contractors, and consultants involved in land and resource management projects.
Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to team members to achieve project objectives.
Collaborate with other departments, such as legal, finance, resources, and government affairs to ensure integrated project delivery.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Land Management, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Project Management, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
5+ years of experience in project management, preferably in land resources, natural resource management, or environmental services.
Strong knowledge of land use policies, subsistence regulations, environmental regulations, and natural resource management practices including the National Environmental Policy Act and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.
Proven experience in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, including rural Areas of Alaska, and regulatory considerations.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in project management software, budgeting tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
PMP or similar project management certification is a plus.
Ability to travel as needed for site visits, stakeholder meetings, and project monitoring.
Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets NANA’s insurance requirements.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoors in and environmentally controlled environment for a majority of the work. Some work will require being outdoors where the employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere. When working outdoors the employee may be exposed to construction sites, mine operations or other related production sites where the noise level would be loud.
Description of environment: Office building with standard office environment when indoors. When working outdoors or at a job site the employee may be exposed to mine equipment, construction equipment, moving objects/equipment or other heavy equipment dependent on the job site. Reference job site specifics.
Physical requirements: Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% within the NANA region and to other locations in Alaska and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs. Travel to areas outside of Alaska may be needed, but on a less frequent basis.
