UCLA’s Department of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences invites applications for a Project Scientist to focus on data science, paleoclimate model-data comparison, paleoclimate reconstructions, community engagement in climate science, and growing a diverse transdisciplinary geoscience workforce through the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science (CDLS). The Project Scientist will perform original research in collaboration with students, community scientists, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and partners, in line with the center’s focus on multigenerational science teams representing different lived experiences and ways of learning. They will provide expertise and analysis on climate science, supporting the work of community partners as part of the center’s focus on the social context of science and mitigating the harmful effects of environmental injustice. They will lead strategic planning and execution of the CDLS Fellows program, which is dedicated to training a new geoscience workforce dedicated to addressing interconnected environmental and social challenges.
The Project Scientist will have a PhD in Earth Science and postdoctoral experience, with at least five years of research experience with relevant publications. They will have a demonstrated record of high-level interdisciplinary research, working in Earth Sciences, computational modeling, data science, and model-data comparison projects. They will have contributed to publications in top-tier and specialty journals, and evidence for both independent research they led through first-author publications, national and international conferences, and active contributions to team-based research projects through collaborative publications. They will have experience in research development, and training and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. They will have leadership experience working on diversity and inclusion initiatives and fellowship programs in higher education. They will have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and in contributing to inclusive research and educational environments, and will be interested in working with community members through programs run by CDLS on mentoring, team-based research, and community engagement, and supporting grant writing and . The project scientist will be based in CDLS directed by Professor Aradhna Tripati.
