Proposal Development Strategist

University Advancement at the University of Virginia seeks a highly motivated Proposal Development Strategist to join their team. This position will be a key component of expanding the Corporate and Foundation Relations team and will play a critical role in achieving the University’s vision for its third century. Part of the central University Advancement office, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) is responsible for supporting pan-university projects, programs, and priorities as well as supporting and coordinating efforts across UVA’s twelve schools.  

 

Reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations, this CFR fundraising position will provide proposal development support, funder research, and undertake special projects aimed at increasing corporate and foundation funding across the institution. The Proposal Development Strategist will find, organize, and analyze information for the team, university leaders, faculty, and development colleagues to support effective organizational fundraising. Responsibilities will include: 

Serving as lead proposal support fundraiser for funding opportunities less than $100,000. 

Providing proposal support through the identification of opportunities and their development and submission, in partnership with development officers, principal investigators, research development colleagues, and foundation relations team members. 

Completing comprehensive special projects to identify strategic areas of opportunity to increase funding or funder connections across the institution. 

Analyzing critical issues and trends related to institutional funders and key thematic areas related to University priorities. 

Managing data analysis and entry from UVA’s two major databases to ensure campaign metrics are accurately captured.  

Reviewing acknowledgement letters for private foundations to ensure content is accurate and appropriate for stewardship. 

Compiling, analyzing, and distributing funder information. 

Proactively sharing funding opportunities and relevant funder information to faculty and development colleagues. 

Performing other duties as assigned. 

 

The ideal candidate will be organized, analytical, and be detail oriented. They will have a proven ability to grasp complex subjects, meet deadlines, and be a motivated self-starter with strong communication skills.  

 

Required qualifications: 

A bachelor’s degree. 

At least one year of related work experience. 

Experience using Microsoft Office suite of tools (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word). 

Self-starter with high level of initiative, ownership, and accountability; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

Superior project management and organization skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to tight deadlines. 

Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate confidently, professionally and effectively with stakeholders, executive leadership, and colleagues. 

Demonstrated comfort and acuity in presenting and building relationships with university leadership and foundation partners. 

Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation toward collaboration and teamwork. 

Ability to prioritize work and pivot quickly in response to shifting priorities. 

Ability to work effectively in a complex environment and perform well under pressure individually and collaboratively as a part of a team. 

A demonstrated interest in higher education and/or philanthropy and a willingness to quickly learn and develop deeper knowledge about these fields. 

Commitment to confidentiality and discretion when dealing with sensitive data. 

Exceptional attention to detail and high standard of excellence. 

 

Preferred qualifications:  

Experience with CRM software and fundraising research tools.  

Familiarity with private philanthropy and a Higher Education environment is strongly preferred. 

 

Location:  

University Advancement offers a flexible and hybrid workspace. While this position is based in Charlottesville, VA, qualified candidates will be considered who live within a reasonable driving distance of Charlottesville with the expectation that they would travel to Charlottesville frequently and as needed for meetings and events. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Shared office space is available to staff in Charlottesville, VA. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in a shared office space. 

 

This position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This position will not sponsor select applications for work visas. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.  

 

Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000 - $65,000/year commensurate with experience.
