Position Summary This position is responsible for examining patients having mental disorders and providing therapeutic care suited for the patients. The main role of mental health nurse practitioners is diagnosing the mental disorder of the patient; however, they are also given license to recommend medicines and provide patient care in a school setting / Day Treatment program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Employees are expected to be awake and alert while working. Provides comprehensive mental health care services with responsibility for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients within scope of licensing and qualifications; develops health care plans according to established standards of care in a Day Treatment Program. Provides treatment and advice to recipients and families as may be indicated: prescribes medications; secures case history and related pertinent information; examines patients; utilizes laboratory and other diagnostic tests, interpreting findings for diagnosis; diagnoses ailment(s) and provides necessary treatment and follow up treatment as may be indicated and within scope of qualifications of license; consults with other health professionals and community providers as needed. Maintains clinical records on all patients seen in a manner consistent with confidentiality of health care records guidelines and department regulations protocol. Conducts face to face assessments with client and collaterals as needed. Provides instruction, guidance or in service training to mental health, medical, and therapist staff as appropriate. Provide Med reviews and evaluations. Other duties may be assigned. Education and/or Experience Certified and registered as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Certification/Licensure Nurse Practitioner in compliance with all applicable statutes, laws, rules and regulations, including but not limited to Article 139 of the New York State Education Law and State Education Law Regulations contained in 8 NYCRR Part 64. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to work independently Condition of employment: must obtain a DEA number in order to prescribe or dispense controlled substances.
