Public Policy Intern
Overview

The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) Government Affairs is seeking a Government Affairs and Public Policy intern from May through August. The largest and one of the oldest not-for-profit home and community-based health care organizations in the U.S., VNSNY focuses on promoting the health and well-being of patients and families by providing expert, cost-effective care in their homes and communities. From pre-natal to end-of-life, we offer a wide range of services, programs, and health plans to meet the diverse needs of our patients, members, and clients. VNSNY Government Affairs is heavily involved in health care public policy and advocacy, specifically focused on home and community-based care and managed care. We advocate and interact with government officials and elected officials at the city, state, and federal levels to create greater awareness about VNSNY and the services and programs that are available to the community.


Responsibilities

Government Affairs sits at the enterprise level of VNSNY, and supports the policy and advocacy needs of the entire organization. The intern will be mentored and given responsibilities based on ability and experience. The intern will focus on supporting efforts to advocate for important issues that impact VNSNY at both the city, state, and federal levels. Reporting to the Government Affairs Associate, the intern will support all aspects of the department. Specific activities include:

Providing analysis, writing and editing support on policy memos and external communications;Supporting editing/development of content/messaging (written docs, grassroots);Conducting research and analyzing important policy issues for further dissemination and analysis;Supporting thought-leadership opportunities and presentation development;Coordinating and preparing for visits with Federal, State and City government and elected officials; andSupporting with special projects.
Qualifications

Requirements

Students applying for this internship must have strong organizational, writing, and communication skills and should be pursuing graduate-level studies in Public Health, Marketing, Health Management, Public Affairs, Community Relations/Outreach or related fields.

The internship will require 15-20 hours per week. Schedule flexible based on the intern’s schedule during the academic year.

Education: Requires current enrollment in graduate school. Experience: Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) or other pc software, as required to meet operational needs. Salesforce experience a plus. Internet proficiency required. Ability to manage detail-oriented tasks preferred.
