Position Summary:
The Public Safety Officer, under the general direction of the Public Safety Supervisor provides a wide range of services to the University community including crime prevention, crime control, parking control and furnishing aid and information to the campus community and visitors. Duties include responding to calls for service, investigating alarms, responding to crimes in progress and scenes of past crimes or incidents and building security. Performs duties in cooperation with the San Diego Police Department and local fire and medical services to minimize harm to victims, witnesses to crimes, and those responding or involved in emergency situations. Additionally, routine duties include responding to non-emergency call for service, providing information, collaborating with student organizations, staff, faculty, and students residing in campus housing to reduce crime and fear, as well as, investigating and preparing written reports on crime, accidents, and injuries.
Starting Salary: $19 an hour ($37,050 annualized), 37.5-hour work week.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Two (2) years law enforcement or security experience, preferably in a higher education institution setting.
Certifications, Licenses, etc.: Basic Introduction P.O.S.T. PC 832, Registered California Guard Card, Baton Permit, OC/Pepper Spray Permit, CPR/First Aid License, California Drivers License, and valid automobile insurance.
Skills:
• Competence with Microsoft Office applications and radio communications systems.
• Must have some knowledge of Penal Codes and Vehicle Codes, and law enforcement operational skills.
• Ability to assume responsibility, to think clearly, and use sound judgment.
• Knowledge of how to use a fire extinguisher and activate fire, or other alarms.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively on the telephone, in person, and in writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Patrol university property in a marked university public safety vehicle.
• Patrol university property buildings and residential areas on foot.
• Observe and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement agencies.
• Enforce local laws and university rules and regulations.
• Educate, present, and inform the community of crime awareness programs, and build community relations to suppress crime including community policing programs.
• General building security of university buildings.
• Provide general law enforcement services to the university community.
• Write incident reports, complete daily activity logs, and maintain general administrative duties as assigned.
• Perform other related tasks, duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or directed.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Direct Reports: None.
Indirect Reports: Contact Security Officers.
Contact Responsibility:
Internal: Interacts with supervisor to receive general direction and instructions and/or review of work results. This position will work closely with colleagues in all departments to assure student, employee, and public safety.
External: Local law enforcement agencies.
Primary Work Location, Hours & Travel Requirements:
Office Location: On Campus.
Work Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 6AM - 2PM. Standard 7.5-hour shift, but may be evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. as Public Safety Officers patrol the university property 24/7.
Travel: None.

Work environment, when in the office, is in a standard office setting. Frequently exposed to low to moderate noise, various odors, temperature changes, and equipment with moving parts, including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, and other standard office equipment. If not in office, while patrolling the campus, may be in a university owned vehicle for extended periods of time, or patrolling the campus on foot.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to execute those physical activities required to perform the essential functions including, but not limited to, regular sitting in office or a vehicle, and being mobile; continual communicating both in person and on the telephone; regular keyboarding; regular reading of both print and digital material; and all other activities required to perform essential functions. May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
