Position Responsibilities Responds to, investigates and assesses situational needs at vehicle crashes. Writes reports based on the investigation conducted regarding vehicle crashes. Performs traffic control (vehicular and pedestrian). Performs duties related to traffic law enforcement. Issues tickets. Tows vehicles in accordance with applicable law. Performs a variety of police-community relations functions. Reports suspicious activities to Communications. Identifies, gathers, and processes evidence at crime scenes according to departmental procedures. Enters reports in departmental computer system. Maintains uniform, equipment, and supplies. This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time. Qualifications High School education or equivalent. Prior related experience preferred (i.e., law enforcement, traffic enforcement, security, public safety, corrections, criminal justice). Must be at least 21 years of age prior to employment in order to qualify for Special Police Powers. Must be able to pass pre-employment screening (background investigation, polygraph examination, drug screen). Must successfully complete Public Safety Officer training. Knowledge of law enforcement information systems; city geography; police report writing; police report writing systems; police radio procedures; traffic enforcement laws and codes; IMPD regulations, policies and procedures; related criminal and civil law; basic computer operation; evidence identification, collection and processing. Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana Driver's License, and be able to operate a public safety vehicle. Must be able to stand for extended periods while directing traffic, walk, kneel, twist, squat, stoop, and bend to conduct accident investigations and collect/process evidence at crime scenes. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to obtain and maintain IDACS/NCIC certification and Special Police Powers. Must be able to learn investigative and interview techniques. Must be able to handle hostile personal contacts. Must be able to operate and maintain issued equipment. Must be able to operate photographic equipment. Independent Judgment Actions are controlled by established federal, state and local laws, IMPD rules regulations and policies, and civilian rules and regulations. High degree of confidentiality required. May have to interact and respond to hostile and/or irate individuals. Work is generally performed independently; supervisory assistance is available when needed. High degree of judgment is required. Errors could have a significant impact on IMPD and the citizens of and visitors to the City of Indianapolis.
