This Publisher role is part of the Neuroscience, a dynamic and global team within STM Journals, with offices around the globe including China, the Netherlands, Germany, UK, and USA. We manage an extensive collection of existing journals and society relationships, launch new journals, acquire new societies, and establish new journal partnerships to ensure annual growth and customer satisfaction. We deliver world-class content by and for researchers across the globe and take a strategic approach to support our various audiences: authors, editors, researchers, societies, and academia.
About the Role
In the Neuroscience team, we are looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual to join us as a Publisher with responsibility to oversee a list of international journals in neuroscience, as well as to drive expansion of our networks, partnerships, and market share in China for the wider group, in line with the overall STM Journals strategy and objectives. The journal list primarily consists of proprietary titles, as well as some society-affiliated titles, including both hybrid and Open Access titles.
To excel in this position, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors, and societies. Based on your experience within the publishing industry globally, you can also easily participate in complex industry discussions with high level stakeholders.
This role can be hired from any of the main Elsevier journal’s offices in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen). You will report to a Publishing Director in Beijing.
What you will do
Portfolio development: Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high-quality manuscripts; Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors; Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations and actively address improvements where required; Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, new launches, articles market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds, editorial fees budget, and author and editor satisfaction.
Market awareness: You should stay up to date with market developments, to identify and map market needs and business opportunities.
Portfolio strategy: Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop a portfolio strategy that will deliver on STMJ targets and to ensure your portfolio remains fully competitive.
China strategy: develop and execute a China strategy plan for Neuroscience in close collaboration with peers.
Relationship building: Stay in close contact with editors and editorial boards within journal portfolio, and engage with stakeholders across the research communities, including research institutes, societies, and funding bodies. Work with colleagues in the team on developing their networks in China.
Teamwork: you will need to work closely with team members and other publishing colleagues to help deliver on collaborative projects and goals.
Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.
What you will bring
Academic degree; in the Life Sciences is not essential but can be an advantage.
Minimum of 3 years relevant STM publishing experience, including experience in open access, with a proven track record of setting and realising goals.
Excellent networking and communication skills, in English and in Mandarin Chinese.
Ability to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and work equally well collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures, in a deadline-oriented environment.
Data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new developments.
Financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development.
Results-oriented with a strong can-do attitude.
Willingness to travel in China and internationally.
