This position reports to the Pulmonary Testing Supervisor. The Pulmonary Testing Respiratory Care Practitioner in his/her role practices as a Respiratory Care Practitioner with a specialty in Pulmonary Function Testing. S/he is responsible for patient testing within the scope of service in accordance with the following organizations; ATS, American Thoracic Society, AARC, American Association of Respiratory Care Practice Guidelines and licensure laws under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Board of Registration of Respiratory Care. The Pulmonary Testing Respiratory Care Practitioner works under physician orders, follows departmental and Lahey Clinic policies to provide pulmonary testing and administer respiratory modalities. The Pulmonary Testing Respiratory Care Practitioner provides medication administration, for all age groups as appropriate, recognizes all respiratory emergencies within the pulmonary clinic setting, acts on best behalf of patients and activates MET [Medical Emergency Team] and Code Blue when necessary. The Pulmonary Testing Respiratory Care Practitioner provides consultative role to physicians and members of the health care team.
**Job Description:**
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
+ Address clinical and administrative situations in a proactive manner; report/seek support from the Pulmonary Testing Supervisor. Report/seek support from the Pulmonary Testing Supervisor, utilize effective judgment in decision making and recognize signs and symptoms of adverse reactions.
+ Manage workflow in an effective manner, may assist in department orientation for new staff members as appropriate and assists residents/fellows during their rotation through the pulmonary testing unit, may participate in community screening projects.
+ Communicate information consistent with departmental standards and policies; assist with implementation of changes to improve departmental operations and clinical performance standards. Participate in departmental quality improvement, report findings where assistance with performance improvement is needed.
+ Acts in the role of Respiratory Care Practitioner with a specialty in pulmonary testing. Provides interventions including medication administration, performs all aspects of pulmonary testing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, performs invasive procedures [arterial blood gas punctures] provide diagnostic testing for inpatient and outpatients, full and short studies, methacholine challenge, cardiopulmonary testing, simple spirometry testing and participates in research projects. Applies technical skills in troubleshooting equipment, cleaning, disinfecting, assembling and testing and calibrating equipment according to ATS guidelines, maintains department supplies.
+ Exercise critical thinking skills in all aspects of care, act as a liaison and support to the health care team and maintain current with innovative developments.
+ Completes patient assessments inclusive of all elements and incorporates patient data based on questionnaire responses.
+ Exercise sound judgment and assessment skills with initial patient intervention and throughout the treatment/support testing cycle to obtain the best optimum outcomes.
+ Maintain competency with current modalities and newly added interventions.
+ Maintain current in continuing education requirements.
+ Achieves and maintains RRT or CRT as appropriate to maintain compliance with Lahey Clinic and state requirements.
+ Attend meetings, participate on committees as needed, sign off on all communication material.
+ Contribute to team approach to provide optimal quality care for patients.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
Education:
Associate degree in respiratory therapy from an Accredited School of Respiratory Therapy.
Licensure, Certification, Registration:
+ Massachusetts License,
+ BLS
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Minimal Computer skills
+ Excellent interpersonal skills
+ Working knowlegde of PC’s.
+ Excellent Oral and Written Communication skills.
+ Ability to impart specialized clinical and medical information to members of the health care team; physician, nurses
Experience:
3 years as a Staff Respiratory Therapist with a focus on pulmonary testing applications
