GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Provides diagnostic procedures, metabolic testing, Transtracheal oxygen, and pulmonary function testing Pulmonary Function area.   

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required.  Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred. Must be certified or registered as a Respiratory Therapist (CRT or RRT) or certified or registered as a Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT or RPFT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

2 years of experience in hospital Respiratory Therapy and/or two years' experience in Pulmonary Function required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support for HealthCare Provider (BLS/HCP) certification required. Training in metabolic/physiologic parameters preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. 

Complete all duties in accordance with a written of verbal medical order and established policies and procedures. Schedule studies to accommodate patients based upon scheduled studies, availability of equipment and staff.

Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Pulmonary function testing (pediatrics, adolescents, and adults) includes, but is not limited to tidal volume, spirometry, lung subdivisions, functional residual capacity, and diffusion studies, post bronchodilator cardiopulmonary exercise testing body plethysmography pulmonary metabolic testing prevocational pulmonary studies arterial blood gas sampling non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry, capnography, transcutaneous oxygen, and carbon dioxide. medical gas and aerosol therapy chest physiotherapy airway management emergency respiratory care.

Evaluates the reliability and reproducibility of test results, patient performance, and clinical implications. Performs and documents scheduled quality control procedures as related to the proper calibration of equipment, reference controls, problem identification, corrective action, and follow up of all equipment in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Participates in the evaluation of pulmonary function equipment, supplies and procedures.

Participates during bronchoscopy procedures.

Documents results of studies and therapy in the medical record.

Participates in patient education. Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement; works with departments/services to improve the care provided.

Maintains the equipment in appropriate working order. If equipment malfunction occurs, seeks to correct this with appropriate resources as soon as possible. Keeps the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the Manager of Pulmonary Diagnostics informed as to the malfunction and repair of the equipment. Provides age and developmental-appropriate care to children, adolescents, and adults.

Revenue Management: Understands and oversees department charges as revenue lead, chargemaster process, charge capture processes and has the ability to execute charge capture and reconciliation processes. Ensures the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. Inputs orders and changes in orders using the powerchart system.

Performs arterial blood gases. Performs equipment calibration and quality assurance of equipment. Administers patient assessment and education.

Inputs orders and changes in orders using the powerchart system and completes tasks in powerchart.
