Purina Animal Nutrition Center is looking for a full-time summer intern for the equine research unit. The equine research unit at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center conducts research focused on four main areas of physiology: exercise, growth and development, palatability and eating behavior, and digestive physiology and the microbiome. The unit houses approximately 75 horses, ranging in age from newborn foals to senior horses.
Pay: $17.88 per hour
Location: Gray Summit, Missouri (housing provided)
Position Duration: May - August
Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this position will be to assist in daily research and sample collections associated with the nutritional research projects being conducted at the equine research unit, as well as working with younger horses on basic groundwork and desensitization. Some of the groundwork includes, but is not limited to, leading, tying, trailer loading, giving to pressure, clipping, and running on the treadmill, if age-appropriate. Please note that no horses will be ridden during this internship.
This role will also assist with daily chores at the equine unit, including, but not limited to, daily feeding, maintenance, horse care, and husbandry. In addition, opportunities to work in our state-of-the-art laboratories, as well as meet with local salespeople, researchers, and sponsored ambassadors, may be available for the optimal candidate.
Skills and Qualifications:
Pursuing a four-year degree in Animal Science, Agricultural Management, Animal Nutrition, or a related major
Sophomore level or higher (preferably Junior level)
Minimum of 2 years of experience in colt starting or young horse training
A passion for horses, training, and an interest in a future career in the equine industry
Horse handling experience is required, as well as the ability to lift 50 lbs
This role is primarily Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, although some weekends may be required and will be outlined in advance of scheduling. Housing is available for candidates. References will be required.
