Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
Position Summary: To perform technical laboratory diagnostic study of cells of the human body to detect evidence of cancerous and precancerous cellular changes and other abnormal conditions
Principle Responsibilities:
TypicalExamines prepared slides with the microscope to detect evidence of abnormalitiesUsing diagnostic codes report negative cases and refers abnormal cases to the pathologists for review.Keeps records of work performed on daily basisResponsible for maintaining the microscope in working conditionMay read Non-GYN specimens and report findings to the pathologists for final diagnosisPeriodicParticipates in all continuing education programs provided by CPLMaintains record of work performedPerforms other related dutiesScope: Responsible for the cytologic studies of specimens and for the initial screening and reporting of normal GYN cases, referring all abnormal cases for pathology review. May read Non-GYN and report the findings to the pathologists for final review and reporting. Promotes quality relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. Works with minimal direction. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and laboratory clients.
This role will have routine access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Employees will be trained on reasonable safeguards and are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, as well as abide by all applicable privacy and security standards. Employees are expected only to access PHI when it is required to fulfill job duties.
Education: Required – Graduation from an accredited school of cytology eligible for registration as a cytotechnologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists

Accuracy: Proficiency in all duties
Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Cytology General Supervisor or other designated person.
Physical Requirements: Routinely requires visual discrimination of color, size, and shape. Requires ability to hear audible alarms on automated stainers, bell timers, and cytospins.
Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment. May come into contact with contagious pathogens and hazardous chemicals. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
