Job Summary:

As a Quality Control Lab Technician for Asphalt Paving, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality and integrity of asphalt materials used in our paving projects. This position involves conducting sample collection, performing stockpile analysis, collecting and reporting data, and maintaining quality control equipment. You will be expected to communicate effectively with both internal teams and external customers to ensure that all materials and processes meet the required specifications and standards. This is a full-time position that requires overtime through peak season, reports to the area superintendent, and has no supervisory responsibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

Be prompt and timely for all assigned shifts, schedules, and projects Be aware of and familiar with the Company Handbook Performing daily QC testing on Hot Mix Asphalt as required (gradations, burn-off’s, density, etc.) Performs sample collection Performs data collection and reporting Performs stockpile analysis on incoming aggregate and RAP stockpile as needed Additional duties as assigned by management, as this job description is non-exhaustive Willingness to perform duties outside the normal scope of work (i.e. work in poor weather conditions or outside normal hours)

 

Essential Duties and Functions:

Sample Collection: Collect and prepare asphalt samples from job sites, stockpiles, and production plants for laboratory analysis. Ensure that proper sampling techniques are followed to obtain accurate and representative samples.

Laboratory Testing and Data Collection: Conduct standard tests on asphalt materials, including gradation, compaction, viscosity, and other relevant quality control tests. Record data accurately and ensure the integrity of results.

Stockpile Analysis: Perform stockpile analysis to verify material quality and ensure it meets project specifications. Work with the production team to monitor and verify the consistency of materials throughout the construction process.

Data Reporting: Compile and document test results, analysis reports, and quality control data. Submit findings to the project management and quality control teams, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. Maintain comprehensive records of all quality control activities.

Quality Control Communication: Communicate effectively with internal teams, such as the project superintendent and construction managers, to inform them of material quality, test results, and potential concerns. Also, coordinate with external customers, such as project owners and inspectors, to provide documentation and address inquiries related to material quality.

Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of quality control equipment to ensure accurate test results. Keep equipment in good working condition, troubleshooting issues as needed and coordinating repairs or replacement when necessary.

Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure safe handling of materials and equipment. Maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations.

Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry standards, best practices, and advancements in asphalt technology. Provide feedback on process improvements to enhance quality control procedures and efficiency.

 

Position Requirements:

Consent to authorization of a pre-employment work screen, Motor Vehicle Record request, and drug test Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a quality control or laboratory technician role, with a focus on asphalt materials, paving, or construction preferred. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in construction materials, civil engineering, or related field is preferred. Skills: Strong knowledge of asphalt materials and testing procedures. Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment and tools related to asphalt testing. Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills for accurate data collection and reporting. Strong communication skills for effective interaction with internal teams and external clients. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively. Proficient in using basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word) for data entry and reporting.
