About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary:

Are you ready to make a difference in the world of heavy machinery? Caterpillar in San Antonio, Texas is seeking a dynamic Quality Inspector I to join our team! As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in exceeding production standards by providing comprehensive support for quality issues on the production line. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with quality managers and various departments to meet both custom and company needs, while focusing on elevating product quality, velocity, and cost-effectiveness through skilled data analysis and effective problem-solving. What you will do:

Perform plan and/or method audits of the production processes to ensure critical to customer actions are correct

Lead Caterpillar Production System continuous improvement activities

Provide support for quality issues on the production line

Escalate and address issues, developing effective countermeasures

Execute containments and communicate results

Create quality alerts following established guidelines

Conduct special studies directed by Production Managers to understand line performance

Monitor and react to quality performance indicators on the production line

Ensure adherence to standard work within the team

Identify and solve problems using Caterpillar Production Systems methods

Maintain safe and clean workstations, including equipment

Communicate with the team about missed inspection items or customer concerns

Maintain or exceed production standards set by the company

Foster a fair and consistent work environment promoting mutual respect

Deliver daily work assignments as directed by Production Managers and assist with special projects

Communicate effectively within the team and across departments

Support out-of-process containment activities and reactive quality measures

Adhere to standard operating procedures and area-specific instructions

Provide process information to supervisors and managers

Occasionally participate in training and development

Perform any other assigned duties

What you will have:

Minimum of 6 months' experience in a machining, manufacturing, or warehouse environment or industry certification

Ability to collaborate with different teams and departments

Ability to read, write, and interpret documents in English

Strong written and verbal communication skills

General knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and/or PowerPoint

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Knowledge of products and assembly tools

Previous experience with Standard Operating Procedures or Standard Work

Ability to adhere to safety procedures

What would make you a top candidate: 

Previous experience reading and interpreting part prints and/or schematics

Intermediate experience navigating PLEX

Proficiency in Built-In Quality (BIQ) Processes

Proficient in gauging techniques, (i.e. thread, height, micrometer, and paint thickness)

Hands on experience assembling or repairing engines, engine components, and/or generators

Knowledge of post-fabrication processes

Knowledge of CMM

Lean manufacturing experience and/or Six-Sigma Certification

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time

Ability to perform repetitive operations

Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.

Additional Information:

$19.00/hour starting payrate;

1st Shift:  Monday - Thursday, 6:00am-2:30pm. Overtime as required.

Relocation assistance is NOT available for this position.
